Madelaine Petsch Joins ‘American Horror Story’ Season 13 as the Mysterious Kira

Madelaine Petsch has added a new credit to her resume, and it comes with a body count. The actress best known for playing Cheryl Blossom on ‘Riverdale’ has joined the ensemble of ‘American Horror Story: 13,’ the anthology series’ latest go around helmed by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.

Petsch plays a character named Kira, described as a mysterious addition who was not expected to stick around for the long haul. Her casting adds another familiar face to what has become one of the largest ensembles in the show’s history.

Kira is revealed in the season’s opening scene to be the girlfriend of a character named Ben, and she dies quite quickly after being introduced. Ben is a new hospice worker brought in and trained by Constance Langdon herself to care for a wealthy elderly patient with a mysterious past, according to Disney Plus, which places Kira’s brief arc inside that storyline from the earliest episodes.

Petsch is noted for her prior work playing Cheryl Blossom, along with a handful of other Blossoms, on ‘Riverdale,’ and more recently for leading the three part ‘The Strangers’ remake. That combination of teen drama stardom and modern horror credentials made her an intriguing pickup for a season built around legacy characters and new blood alike.

Petsch was born Madelaine Grobbelaar Petsch on August 18, 1994, in Port Orchard, Washington, and holds American and South African citizenship. She was cast as Cheryl Blossom on The CW’s ‘Riverdale’ in February 2016, a series that premiered on January 26, 2017, and ran for seven seasons before ending on August 23, 2023.

American Horror Story Season 13 Cast Grows Crowded

The season’s ensemble stretches far beyond Petsch’s newcomer role. Jamie Brewer, Elle Chapman, Seth Gabel, Orlando Jones, Tig Notaro, Fedor Steer, and Zach Villa were confirmed as part of the cast alongside Petsch in August, joining earlier additions like Frances Conroy, Avantika, Grace Dumdaw, and Cara Delevingne.

Ryan Murphy revealed that Sarah Paulson was set to play six to seven roles this season, while Evan Peters was set to play five characters. Jessica Lange makes her long-awaited full return to the franchise this season, reprising Constance Langdon from Murder House along with Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode, and Elsa Mars, plus a fifth character that has not yet been revealed.

Other new faces round out the cast alongside Petsch. John Waters joins as a medical specialist named Mr. Phibes, a character built as a direct reference to the Vincent Price horror classic ‘The Abominable Dr. Phibes,’ while Orlando Jones takes over the role of Papa Legba, previously played by the late Lance Reddick.

Alex Consani and Avantika join the coven at Miss Robichaux’s as new witches Morwenna and Ophelia, adding two more names to a roster that already leans heavily on returning franchise veterans playing multiple parts across multiple timelines.

American Horror Story 13 Premiere and Production Details

Production on the season moved quickly once the cast came together. Filming began in April 2026, and by July the cast was spotted shooting in SoHo, Manhattan, with production wrapping on July 27, 2026. The season officially premiered at the Hotel Chelsea in New York City on September 23, 2026.

The season is structured as 13 episodes, with premiere week and the following week each delivering three new episodes, before the schedule settles into two new episodes a week leading up to a finale on October 29. FX and 20th Television are behind the release, with Disney serving as the parent company of both FX and 20th Television.

Despite the season’s title nodding heavily toward the fan favorite ‘Coven’ era, Ryan Murphy has said the season is not a direct continuation of that installment, but rather a collation of elements pulled from across the anthology’s history, with actors returning to multiple roles. Murphy told Variety that the seasons fans responded to most were ‘Murder House,’ ‘Asylum,’ ‘Coven,’ ‘Freak Show,’ and ‘Cult,’ and that some actors would be playing two characters from two different seasons in the same scene.

Returning AHS 13 Characters Anchor the New Season

The season leans on nostalgia as much as new mysteries like Kira. Sarah Paulson returns primarily as Cordelia Goode, the current Coven Supreme, alongside Wilhemina Venable, the tyrannical ruler of Outpost 3 first introduced in ‘Apocalypse’. Angela Bassett is back as Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, a character with a long and complicated history involving Papa Legba and the witches of Miss Robichaux’s.

Evan Peters reprises Tate Langdon from ‘Murder House,’ James March from ‘Hotel,’ and Kai Anderson from ‘Cult,’ three of the character types most closely associated with the actor’s run on the franchise. Emma Roberts also returns as fan favorite witch Madison Montgomery, a role most closely tied to her breakout appearance in ‘Coven’.

Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Jamie Brewer, and Kathy Bates round out a list of returning coven adjacent characters, most of whom have appeared consistently in the franchise since the ‘Apocalypse’ era. Set against that dense web of legacy storylines, a fresh and short lived character like Kira gives the season a small pocket of unpredictability amid so many familiar faces.

Kira may not be built to last the season, but her introduction says something about how ‘American Horror Story: 13’ is using new performers to punctuate a story otherwise crowded with returning icons.
