After years of talk about superhero fatigue, Marvel suddenly has a very different problem: managing sky-high expectations. The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ presales have been generating headlines for weeks, and the latest data from box office trackers suggests the hype is only accelerating.

Disney kicked things off unusually early. Tickets first went on sale on July 20 alongside the first trailer, limited to premium formats, with Variety reporting $16.5 million in the first 24 hours, before sales opened for all theaters and showtimes at D23 in August.

Now, a new update from box office trackers on the BoxOfficeTheory forums, which quickly made the rounds on Reddit’s r/boxoffice community, suggests ‘Doomsday’ is running even hotter than expected. According to the data, presales at 83 days before release have already passed the sales pace ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ reached with just 21 days to go.

The same tracking points to more than $60 million in preview grosses, with $70 million considered possible. That would put ‘Doomsday’ in the same territory as ‘Brand New Day’, which earned $72 million from its Wednesday evening and Thursday preview screenings.

For further context, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ pulled in $60 million from Thursday night previews back in 2019. Hitting the higher end of these projections would place ‘Doomsday’ among the biggest preview launches ever.

The early momentum has been remarkable. After its first 2 days of wide availability, ‘Doomsday’ was running roughly 65% ahead of the pace set by ‘Brand New Day’ over the same window, according to TheWrap.

By August 19, tracking firm Global Box Office had total presales at $35 million. That figure crossed $50 million with 100 days still to go, and more recent reports put it past $55 million, with over 70% of tickets sold for premium formats.

A Disney executive touted the milestone during a recent presentation, highlighting the huge enthusiasm from fans eager for another Avengers movie. The studio also said the July trailer became its most-viewed ever.

Of course, ‘Brand New Day’ set an extraordinary bar. The Sony release opened to a record $360 million domestic weekend, edging out ‘Endgame’s’ $357.1 million, and it collected an estimated $150 million in presales by the Thursday before release.

It has since grossed more than $2.4 billion worldwide and is on track to pass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing film in U.S. history before inflation. Still, ‘Brand New Day’ didn’t start presales until about 1.5 months before release, which gives ‘Doomsday’ a far longer runway to build.

Analysts have been careful to add some caveats. Because no major blockbuster has launched presales this early, it’s hard to know how reflective these numbers truly are, and presales measure intention rather than guaranteed turnout.

‘Doomsday’ will also share its December 18 release date with ‘Dune: Part Three’, setting up a massive holiday showdown. Some observers point to the success of 2023’s double-feature phenomenon with ‘Oppenheimer’ as proof that 2 major films can thrive in the same window.

Fans on r/boxoffice are already bracing for the madness, with one top commenter predicting the community is going to explode by the end of the year. If the current pace holds, the MCU’s biggest crossover could be heading for one of the most historic openings Hollywood has ever seen.

Do you think Avengers: Doomsday can set a new preview record this December?
