‘The Odyssey’ Is Taking Its Final Imax 70MM Bow at Lincoln Square, and Seats Are Nearly Gone

For cinephiles in New York City, seeing ‘The Odyssey‘ at AMC Lincoln Square has been this year’s ultimate moviegoing quest, and the final IMAX 70mm screening of Christopher Nolan’s epic is about to close the chapter. After months of sold-out shows, scalper drama and middle-of-the-night showtimes, the voyage is nearly over.

Lincoln Square has been ground zero for this phenomenon. The Upper West Side venue is the only spot in the city, and one of just 41 in the world, capable of projecting the full IMAX 70mm cut of the film. Its screen stands 75.6 feet high and 101 feet wide, and the Homeric epic is the first feature-length film shot entirely using an IMAX 70mm film camera.

The end date is now set. As Christopher Nolan Archives shared, the final IMAX 70mm screening of ‘The Odyssey’ at AMC Lincoln Square takes place on Wednesday night, with only a few seats remaining. The ticketing page lists the showing for Wednesday, September 30 at 10:00 PM, and the seat map shows just a scattering of open spots in the front and back rows.

That farewell lines up with the official schedule. Universal and IMAX extended the rare 70mm engagement through the end of September, the third extension since the movie opened July 17. The move brought the large-format run to 11 weeks, with additional showtimes at 39 IMAX 70mm auditoriums through September 30.

The demand for these seats has been legendary. Universal offered tickets to select IMAX 70mm screenings exactly 1 year ahead of the film’s debut, leading to nationwide sell-outs within minutes. At one point, a package of 4 Saturday tickets for Lincoln Square started bidding at $1,000.

The chaos continued once the movie arrived. The theater holds more than 400 seats and hosted 4 to 5 screenings a day, yet nearly every 70mm showing sold out, with $33 tickets going for hundreds of dollars on resale sites. AMC even scheduled regular 2 a.m. screenings to keep up.

Fans resorted to creative tactics to get in. Because AMC doesn’t announce when new batches of tickets drop, the situation sparked a frenzy of online sleuthing and fake offers from scammers.

The numbers explain why the run kept getting extended. ‘The Odyssey’ is Nolan’s highest-grossing movie at $1.55 billion and Universal’s second-biggest ever after ‘Jurassic World’. It has also become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

The IMAX figures are just as staggering. The film is the format’s highest-grossing release ever, with $457 million worldwide, and IMAX 70mm screenings alone have earned $66 million across 41 locations for a massive $1.6 million per-screen average. That haul is more than double what ‘Avatar’ earned in the format back in 2009.

IMAX leadership has been open about how far the film has exceeded expectations. “We had the very highest of hopes for ‘The Odyssey’ from the start,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told Variety. “But it somehow continues to exceed them.”

Part of the magic is the format itself. The IMAX 70mm presentation is considered the cinematic gold standard at 18K resolution, and IMAX even developed a next-generation film camera with technology enabling sync sound for the production. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and more.

For many fans, the Lincoln Square screen has been the definitive way to experience Nolan’s vision. As one AMC employee there put it to Gothamist, the 70mm showings created a culture of exclusivity that pushed demand to heights the theater hadn’t seen in a while.
