Jensen Ackles Has the Perfect Pitch To Bring ‘Supernatural’ Back, and It Starts With a Knock on the Door

More than 5 years after the Winchester brothers drove off into the sunset, the ‘Supernatural‘ revival conversation refuses to die, and Jensen Ackles just gave fans the most tantalizing reason yet to keep hoping. The CW series spanned 15 seasons and 327 episodes, making it the longest-running show in the network’s history. Its fanbase, affectionately known as the “SPN Family,” has never really let it go.

That devotion is on full display on the convention circuit. Stars like Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins still regularly attend fan events, answering questions and sharing behind-the-scenes stories as part of ‘The Road So Far… The Road Ahead’ tour. The latest stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, was scheduled for September 25-27 with Ackles and Collins headlining.

At a recent Creation convention panel, captured on video by the fan site Fangasm, Ackles opened up about how he would bring the show back, admitting he wishes the series had ended on a cliffhanger.

His idea is refreshingly simple. Ackles explained that he would have liked for Jack to walk through the front door, approach Sam and Dean, and tell the brothers he needs to send them back. In other words, the door to more adventures would have been left wide open, with the show’s most powerful character acting as the key.

The pitch works because of where the finale left things. In the final episode, ‘Carry On’, Bobby reveals that after Jack became God, he and Castiel reshaped Heaven, giving everyone what they wanted and tearing down the walls that kept souls apart. That makes Jack the one character with the power to pull the Winchesters out of paradise and back into the hunt.

Jack, played by Alexander Calvert, has always been a wildcard. Introduced as Lucifer’s son in Season 13, he started the story unsure of himself and the world. He was later killed by Chuck and resurrected by Death in the hopes of killing God, eventually rising to become God himself.

The finale itself remains a sore spot for some viewers. In ‘Carry On’, Sam and Dean return to their regular lives of hunting monsters, until Dean is impaled in the back by a spike during a fight with vampires. The final season had been confirmed by Padalecki, Ackles and Collins back in March 2019, giving fans plenty of time to brace for the goodbye.

That’s partly why Ackles’ comments landed so strongly. Replies to the post were overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with one fan saying it was exactly what they had been hoping for, while another pointed out that there are plenty of ways to bring the brothers back.

This isn’t the first time Ackles has dreamed up scenes for the show. At a 2017 convention, he pitched a moment where Dean climbs a building using the Impala’s grappling hook, only to look down and see Sam casually walking in through the unlocked door. Years earlier, he also said he enjoyed episodes that brought back beloved characters, naming John, Benny and Charlie as ones he’d love to see return.

Of course, any revival would have to fit around Ackles’ packed career. He shaved his iconic beard for his role in the upcoming series ‘Vought Rising’, and he continues to perform music with Steve Carlson in their band Radio Company. Padalecki and Collins have kept busy as well, and nothing official points to a return.
