It’s Official: Jensen Ackles Is Your New Lucas Davenport in MGM+’s ‘Rules of Prey’
Speculation has a funny way of building momentum long before anything becomes official. Just days ago, fans were piecing together set sightings and casting rumors, trying to connect the dots on what exactly Jensen Ackles was filming in Toronto. Now, the guesswork is finally over.
Deadline confirmed in an exclusive report that Ackles is set to headline and executive produce ‘Rules of Prey,’ an original drama series that has officially been greenlit at MGM+. The eight-episode series marks his latest crime-focused leading role, adapting the first novel in John Sandford’s long-running ‘Prey’ book franchise.
Ackles will play Lucas Davenport, a former Minneapolis Police Department detective drawn out of seclusion to investigate a string of murders committed by a serial killer who leaves behind a deliberately confounding, rule-based pattern designed specifically to challenge him. According to the official logline, the story unfolds as a psychological duel between the two men, with Davenport risking everything to decode the killer’s twisted moral code before more victims fall.
MGM+ global head Michael Wright didn’t hold back in expressing confidence in the pairing of star and source material. “Jensen Ackles’ classic leading man charisma, combined with Bruce Terris’ skillful adaptation of John Sandford’s enduringly popular Prey series is an excellent fit for MGM+,” Wright said in comments reported by Deadline. He added that the series “delves into the psychological depth and suspense that made Sandford’s novels unmissable reading.”
Bruce Terris, known for his work on ‘DTF St. Louis’ and ‘Patriot,’ is attached as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. He’s joined by a substantial executive producing team that includes Charles Gogolak and Matt Leipzig of Modern Literary Arts, Howard Braunstein, Michael Jaffe, and the filmmaking duo John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. Sandford himself is credited as a co-producer on the adaptation.
Sandford, whose real name is John Camp, launched the Prey franchise back in 1989 with the original novel of the same name, and the series has since grown into one of the most enduring names in crime fiction. More than two dozen of his novels have debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, giving the television adaptation a massive library of material to potentially draw from in future seasons.

The franchise has also expanded well beyond Davenport himself over the decades, spawning spin-off characters including Virgil Flowers and Davenport’s own daughter, Letty, who headlines her own separate book series. That expansive universe gives ‘Rules of Prey’ considerable room to grow if the show finds an audience.
Production is currently underway in Toronto and is scheduled to continue filming through December. Once complete, ‘Rules of Prey’ will premiere on MGM+ across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile.
The project marks Ackles’ second consecutive crime-thriller leading role for Amazon MGM Studios, following his previous series ‘Countdown.’ That earlier project struggled critically despite performing well in the streaming charts before being canceled after a single season, giving this new adaptation added significance as a potential rebound vehicle built on far more established source material.

With a built-in literary fanbase and a showrunner experienced in crime drama, ‘Rules of Prey’ arrives with considerably more foundational support than Ackles’ last outing. Whether that translates into the kind of critical and audience success his previous Prime Video series couldn’t quite achieve remains to be seen.
