The Russo Brothers Promise Thor’s Clash With Doctor Doom Will Be Brutal in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Few Marvel heroes have been reinvented as often as Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, and the Thor vs. Doctor Doom showdown in ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is shaping up to be his most defining battle yet. Over the years, the character has shifted from Shakespearean royalty to comedic sidekick to grief-stricken recluse, depending largely on who was behind the camera. His most recent solo outing leaned heavily into comedy, a tone that drew complaints from fans and even from Hemsworth himself.
Now, Hemsworth is reuniting with Joe and Anthony Russo for the first time since ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The directors’ return, along with Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as the new villain Doctor Doom, was announced back in July 2024.
The film sees the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and X-Men team up against Downey’s Doom. In a new interview with CBR, the filmmakers opened up about their plans for the Asgardian and his confrontation with Marvel’s most formidable villain.
Joe Russo made it clear which version of the hero audiences can expect. “We have a specific point of view on that character. That’s what we’re going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor,” he told CBR.
He then described exactly what drives the character this time around. “We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle,” Russo explained, before adding that this journey pits Thor against the greatest foe he’s ever met. “As you can see from the trailers, it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”

Marvel has been steadily teasing the conflict in its promotional footage. In the CinemaCon footage, Thor leaps at a fully armored Doom with Stormbreaker, only for Doom to stop the axe mid-swing, with another report noting he appeared to do it with just 2 fingers.
The stakes only grew from there. In the D23 trailer, Thor promises Doom will be begging for hell long before he grants it, but Doom blocks the axe, hits him with a beam of green energy, and raises an army of Sentinels. The first trailer in July also showed Doom holding the upper hand in a one-on-one battle.
The teasers hint at a more reflective side to the hero as well. Thor is shown praying to his father, Odin, for the strength of the All-Fathers as multiversal threats begin to rise, and in one clip he admits the heroes will need a miracle to defeat Doom.
The Russos have described Doom as one of the most complex characters in comic books. They found him challenging because of his immense power, while also relishing the chance to explore his complexities and vulnerabilities. Downey even developed his own backstory for the villain and contributed costume ideas.
Joe Russo also praised Hemsworth’s versatility, noting that the actor brings plenty of both pathos and comedy to the role. He added that it’s fascinating how malleable Hemsworth is after working with directors of very different tastes and tones.
The reaction online has been electric. One fan replying to MCU Film News joked that Thor was getting the “Batman vs Bane” treatment, suggesting Doom could break the hero before he rises again. Others have theorized that Thor might unlock the Odinforce or Thorforce, though neither has been confirmed.
Whatever happens, the Russos seem determined to give Thor the weight and gravity fans have been craving since ‘Infinity War’. With Doom dominating every trailer so far, the God of Thunder may need to dig deeper than ever before.
