The CW drama ‘All American’ signed off on Monday, September 28, closing a run whose final 13 episodes aired between July 13 and September 28. With the credits now rolled, the question hanging over the fanbase is whether the story could continue in some form.

Nothing has softened that position since. A Nexstar Media Group press release in April described the upcoming run as the eighth and final season, which leaves little room for a reversal. The wording stayed consistent from the original announcement through the premiere.
The renewal itself came at an unusual moment. It did not arrive until after season seven had ended on a major cliffhanger, so viewers learned at the same time that the story would be resolved and that it had a defined endpoint. Filming ran from August to December 2025, which gave the creative team time to build toward a planned conclusion.
Why the Final Season Was the Last One at The CW
The decision traces back to a change in ownership. Nexstar Media Group acquired The CW in 2022, and most of the network’s original scripted series were canceled or given final-season orders. The network now prioritizes unscripted programming and licenses shows from international production houses instead of producing its own.
‘All American’ stood apart because of its history. It was the last remaining scripted series on the network that launched before the sale to Nexstar, which made its exit a symbolic close to a chapter of the network’s identity.
The network framed the ending as a farewell rather than a cancellation. CW president Brad Schwartz said the network was honored to bring the show back for one last season so fans could say a meaningful goodbye. Creator and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll said the team was grateful to finish the story the way they had envisioned.
How the Series Finale Wrapped the Story
The finale was titled “To Live and Die in L.A.” and it leaned heavily on the show’s origins. It welcomed back original cast members Daniel Ezra as Spencer and Samantha Logan as Olivia, with Ezra also directing the episode. A six-year time jump revealed where the characters ended up.
Ezra described how the assignment came about in an interview with TV Insider. He said Carroll called him to direct and star in the finale, telling him she could not think of anyone else for the job. He added that the honor quickly gave way to pressure, since this was the last episode the series would ever have.
The closing moments also brought back a familiar face. Taye Diggs made a surprise return as Billy Baker in the final scenes, and Carroll said the ending did not feel right without the character, even posthumously. The choice tied the finale back to the family history that has anchored the series from the start.
Spinoff Chances Beyond the Finale
The franchise has already tried this path once. ‘All American Homecoming’ premiered on The CW on February 21, 2022, and ran for three seasons, but the network decided not to proceed with a fourth season. That history shows how difficult it has been to extend the brand on the current version of the network.
Some observers still see room for more. One finale preview pointed to the potential for spinoffs like ‘All American Homecoming’ as a sign the story could continue beyond Spencer James. TV Insider also asked cast members to pitch their own dream spinoffs, which suggests the appetite exists on set.
Any future project would likely need a new home.
