George and Amal Clooney’s Simple Marriage Rule Has Survived More Than a Decade of Globe-Trotting

Hollywood romances rarely come with a playbook, but George and Amal Clooney’s marriage rule has quietly become one of the most talked-about details of their life together. The couple celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary on September 27, marking another year since their star-studded 2014 wedding in Venice.

Their love story began in 2013, and they tied the knot a year later before welcoming twins Alexander and Ella in June 2017. For a man once known as Hollywood’s eternal bachelor, it’s been quite a transformation, especially since Clooney had been married once before, to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993.

As the anniversary brings older interviews back into the spotlight, one promise stands out. Shortly after the wedding, George and Amal made a deal to make sure their busy schedules and the distance between them wouldn’t become a problem, agreeing never to spend more than a week apart.

Clooney discussed the pact in a 2015 interview with news.com.au, where he said married life hadn’t been much of an adjustment. According to him, the only real challenge was figuring out their schedules, and the one-week limit had been working well.

The rule’s appeal lies in its simplicity. Instead of juggling a list of complicated guidelines, it gives the couple one clear limit to plan around, and Clooney has admitted the schedule can sometimes be tricky because of Amal’s demanding job.

It’s worth adding some context. In 2016, Clooney told ET that an “exclusive interview” published by Hello! magazine and widely reprinted had been completely fabricated, with quotes he said were inaccurate.

That disputed article included a claim that the couple never spent more than a week apart and that they stay in touch through social media. Still, the 2015 news.com.au comments are the ones most outlets point to when discussing the pact.

These days, the Clooneys spend much of their time with their twins in France. Their main home is Domaine du Canadel, a vineyard estate near Brignoles that they bought in 2021, and the family received French citizenship at the end of 2025.

The couple also own a Grade II listed estate in Oxfordshire, England, and a house near Lake Como in Italy. Wherever they are, they protect their privacy by hosting gatherings at home, even using a phone basket so friends and family can enjoy quality time together.

Amal has spoken about how hard privacy has become. In a 2025 interview with Glamour, she explained that becoming parents made the couple even more determined to protect it.

Clooney has said he didn’t think he had much of a chance with Amal at first, since he was 17 years older and she seemed to have everything she needed. Amal, meanwhile, has recalled being 35 when they met and not feeling eager to marry or start a family without the right person.

Despite tabloid rumors over the years, Clooney has consistently dismissed claims that their marriage is in trouble as baseless. More than a decade on, they remain one of the most talked-about couples in the world.

This anniversary followed an emotional public moment. When Clooney received a lifetime achievement award at the Venice International Film Festival in September, he said he was at a loss for words to express how much he loves his wife and how proud he is of her. It was a fitting tribute in the very city where they said: “I do.” Now 65 and 48, George and Amal have proven that sometimes the simplest promises last the longest.
