That film, which also starred Dern, premiered in Venice the previous year, and organizers used clips during the ceremony that mirrored what was actually unfolding in the room.
After a montage of highlights from Clooney’s career, Dern took the stage to deliver her tribute speech. She said it was an honor to pay tribute to her friend, praised his talent, and reminded the audience that he had been nominated for an Oscar across six different categories, calling him a man of integrity, according to Variety.

It was a message that resonated strongly with an audience gathered specifically to celebrate the power of storytelling.
The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement has been awarded at Venice since 1969, honoring directors, actors and other towering figures in cinema. Clooney now joins that lineage as one of the festival’s most recognizable honorees, following in the footsteps of past recipients who have used the same stage for their own reflections on art and legacy.
Between the tears, the jokes about his age, and a speech that turned personal celebration into cultural commentary, Clooney’s night in Venice was never going to be a quiet one. It capped off an opening ceremony that blended nostalgia, friendship and a reminder of why festivals like this one still matter.
