Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames Casts a Dangerous Spell in New ‘East of Eden’ Look Ahead of Netflix Premiere
Netflix is treating its adaptation of John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’ like the prestige event of its fall lineup, and Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames sits at the very heart of it. Zoe Kazan’s version of the classic novel arrives nearly 4 years after it was first announced. For fans who have followed the long road to the screen, the wait is almost over.
The series tells a sweeping generational story. Pugh’s antihero Cathy has a life intertwined with generations of the Trask family, notably Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles (Mike Faist), as the characters live out the darker side of the California dream.
The cast also includes Joseph Zada, Joe Anders, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciarán Hinds. On the eve of its debut, a new look at Pugh as Cathy Ames has started circulating online, shared by Netflix on X.
The brief 10-second clip shows Pugh in period costume and a black choker, glancing back over her shoulder with a cool, unreadable stare that perfectly captures the character’s mystery. It’s a small tease, but it lands at exactly the right moment, just before the series begins streaming.
The timing is ideal for the promotional push. All 7 episodes will drop on Netflix on Thursday, October 1, meaning viewers won’t face a weekly wait. Netflix revealed the official trailer and new photos on September 2, with the footage putting Cathy front and center in a moody, tense, and unapologetically dark way.
This adaptation isn’t simply retelling a familiar story. Kazan moves Cathy from the book’s dark periphery to its center, and she wanted to unpack the motivations behind Cathy’s harmful decisions, an idea that also appealed to Pugh. In one notable change, the show treats an incident from Cathy’s childhood as abuse rather than as a child manipulating those around her.

Pugh has been open about how much the role affected her. Speaking to Gold Derby, she said bringing the character to a new generation of audiences is “totally terrifying,” adding, “I’m really, really defensive and protective of Cathy.” Both Pugh and Kazan still admit Cathy isn’t exactly a moral character, with Pugh calling her wicked.
Kazan’s faith in her leading lady runs deep. Kazan first approached Pugh about starring in the series 2 weeks into COVID, when everything had shut down, and Pugh was the only actor Kazan named in her script. “Florence looks like a doll, but she has this steel rod inside,” Kazan told TIME.
Pugh is stepping into a role with real history behind it. She follows Jane Seymour’s memorable performance in the 1981 television adaptation, while Jo Van Fleet played Cathy in the 1955 film. That film carries special weight for the showrunner, since Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed it.

Kazan knows the risk of reimagining such a beloved text. She has acknowledged that many fans will be unhappy with her version, since no adaptation can ever be an exact replica of the source material. Still, she has insisted on staying close to Steinbeck, explaining that nearly everything in the series has at least a root in the book.
Pugh’s commitment extends beyond the screen, too. She leads as Cathy and also serves as an executive producer on the series. Early promotional material has made clear that her portrayal leans into empathy rather than simple villainy, a mix of nerves and devotion that suggests something special.
