Few MCU mysteries have lingered quite like the fate of Wanda Maximoff, and the marketing for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ keeps pouring fuel on the fire. At the end of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch stayed behind to destroy Mount Wundagore, which collapsed on top of her, leaving fans to wonder whether she would ever return.

Hints have been piling up ever since. A Marvel ‘TVA’ comic published in February 2025 showed Spider-Gwen walking past what appeared to be the MCU version of the Scarlet Witch in a stasis chamber at TVA headquarters, while insider Daniel Richtman has claimed the character will receive a solo project in the MCU’s next saga.

Now Marvel itself has stoked the speculation. On October 3, Marvel Studios shared a new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ poster from Comic-Con Málaga on X, captioning it with a deliberately suggestive line announcing that witching season has arrived.

The poster shows Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom descending the steps of his Latverian throne room, bathed in eerie green light from towering stained glass windows. Behind him stand 3 masked figures, widely known among fans as the Latverian Witches.

Their presence alone isn’t a surprise. ComicBook.com pointed out that the film is already confirmed to feature witches, since the Latverian Witches have appeared in several places throughout the marketing campaign.

What has fans buzzing is a subtle color change. At July’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel displayed costumes for 3 witches in green, yellow, and purple, but on the new poster, the witch at the back appears to be dressed in red instead.

Comic Book Movie argued that nothing is accidental in the marketing for a film this big, calling the scarlet costume the closest thing yet to confirmation that Wanda has fallen under Doom’s spell. Combined with the “witching season” caption, the clues feel too pointed to ignore.

Other outlets shared a similar view, suggesting Marvel knew exactly what fans would take from the post and likely chose the wording to spark this very conversation. Social media certainly took the bait, with theories spreading quickly across fan communities.

Fans have also tried to identify the other 2 witches. Dark Horizons noted that many believe Olsen’s Wanda is the red-robed figure, with Charlize Theron’s Clea as the purple one and Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie as the green one.

Those theories fit the scale of the film. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set 14 months after the main events of ‘Thunderbolts*’, with the Avengers, the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers and the X-Men joining forces to face Doctor Doom.

Theron’s Clea and Olsen’s Wanda were both last seen in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, while Di Martino’s Sylvie appeared in both seasons of ‘Loki’. Any of them would make sense in a multiversal story centered on a sorcerer-king like Doom.

Directed by the Russo Brothers, the film is part of Phase 6 of the MCU, with Downey Jr. also set to play Doom in the direct sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. That gives Marvel plenty of room to bring Wanda back gradually across both films.

For now, Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed the identities of the witches. The studio seems perfectly happy to let the mystery build as the release date approaches. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving in theaters on December 18, fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether the Scarlet Witch has truly risen from the rubble of Mount Wundagore.

Do you think Scarlet Witch is really back in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
