Today marks James Bond Day, the annual celebration of the October 5 release of 1962’s ‘Dr. No’, and 007 fans have plenty to talk about. The franchise is preparing for a fresh start under Amazon MGM, and the speculation around who will star in the next James Bond film has reached fever pitch.

The creative team is already taking shape. Denis Villeneuve was officially announced as director of the 26th Bond film on June 25, 2025, with ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight writing the script, and the project is expected to arrive in 2028 after Villeneuve wraps his ‘Dune’ commitments.

While most of the attention has focused on who will play Bond, a new report has turned the spotlight onto the other side of the equation. According to The Sun, as reported by NME, ‘House of the Dragon’ star Ewan Mitchell is being considered to play a villain in Villeneuve’s upcoming 007 film.

The 29-year-old actor plays the ruthless Prince Aemond Targaryen in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off. That reputation for unsettling, menacing characters is exactly what many fans expect from a classic Bond villain.

The Sun’s source suggested Mitchell would be an ideal choice for Amazon because he has built a strong résumé without being as established as some of the names linked to the franchise. The insider added that producers are looking for an up-and-coming talent with a very distinct look, and that his age fits a reboot aiming for a younger cast.

Mitchell’s credits also include the BBC series ‘The Last Kingdom’ and ‘World on Fire’. He appeared in Emerald Fennell’s 2023 film ‘Saltburn’, which starred reported Bond contender Jacob Elordi.

The push toward a younger ensemble could have wider consequences. According to The Independent, the report casts doubt on whether older cast members from the Daniel Craig era, including Ralph Fiennes and Rory Kinnear, will return.

That aligns with what has been reported about the lead role. Deadline has reported that Villeneuve wants an unknown British actor in his late 20s or early 30s to play Bond himself. Names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner and Jack Lowden have consistently dominated Bond speculation. However, none of them has been officially confirmed.

Behind the scenes, the casting process has been gathering momentum. Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman reportedly narrowed down a shortlist and held a second round of auditions throughout August.

Casting director Nina Gold has also been widely reported to be leading the search, though the studio has not officially confirmed her involvement. Industry insider Jeff Sneider has said he heard rumors that the team may have already found their Bond, adding that he doesn’t believe it’s one of the so-called frontrunners.

Amazon confirmed back in May that the search for the next James Bond was underway. The company said it didn’t plan to comment on specific casting details but would share news with fans when the time was right.

It’s important to stress that nothing has been confirmed. Mitchell hasn’t commented on the report, and no actors have officially been cast in any major roles. Some optimistic fans are hoping James Bond Day will bring official casting news. Until then, the Mitchell story remains industry chatter, though it’s an exciting one to imagine.

If the report proves true, a ‘House of the Dragon’ villain going toe-to-toe with a new 007 under Villeneuve’s direction could be one of the most intriguing matchups in the franchise’s history.

Would Ewan Mitchell make a great villain in Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond film?
