Few casting announcements have sparked as much excitement this year as Maya Boyd joining Marvel’s new ‘X-Men’ movie. The Broadway breakout was revealed as the MCU’s Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, at Disney’s D23 fan event on August 14, with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirming the news.

The role marks a massive leap for the young actress. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2002, Boyd earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre from the University of Michigan and made her Broadway debut in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’, before playing Juliet Capulet in ‘& Juliet’ and appearing in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’.

Now fans are getting a fresh look at the MCU’s newest mutant. Newly shared photos of Boyd posted on October 6 show the 23-year-old in a pair of striking portraits, with one fan simply responding with the word “Storm.”

The first image has a rich, golden glow. Boyd leans against a wooden door in a strapless brown dress, her voluminous dark curls framing her face as she gazes past the camera. The second photo is a softer close-up. Boyd glances to the side with luminous skin and glossy lips, her curls once again taking center stage.

The relaxed, editorial feel of the images gives fans a different look at the actress outside of red carpets and stage lights. It’s also a reminder of why so many fans responded so enthusiastically to her casting.

Boyd’s casting fulfilled years of fan requests. Many Storm fans had long urged Marvel to cast a dark-skinned Black actress who visually reflects the African superhero they know from the comics.

She follows 2 notable predecessors. Halle Berry first brought Storm to the big screen in 2000’s ‘X-Men’, while Alexandra Shipp later played a younger version of the character in films including ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’.

Some longtime fans had criticized those earlier films for casting actresses with lighter complexions than the character traditionally depicted on the page. That history has helped fuel the enthusiasm surrounding Boyd’s arrival.

Remarkably, ‘X-Men’ will likely mark Boyd’s feature film debut. The role could introduce her to her largest audience yet after a career built largely on stage. Ebony noted that with Boyd in her early twenties, there is plenty of room for Storm to grow across future Marvel projects. That gives the studio a fresh face to build around for years to come.

Boyd is joining an impressive young ensemble. The cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Adam Driver as the villainous Mr. Sinister.

The film is set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028, as the X-Men formally enter the MCU. Berry, meanwhile, previously confirmed that she would not be returning as Storm for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

With years to go before the film’s release, photos like these offer fans an early taste of the star power Boyd brings. If her latest portraits are any indication, the MCU’s new Storm is more than ready for her close-up.
