Netflix’s ‘Below’ Release Date, Time, Trailer, Cast, and Plot
‘Below’ is a six episode limited series that arrives on Netflix on Thursday, October 8. Netflix is positioning the thriller as its next creature feature for the spooky season, following the performance of ‘Widow’s Bay’. The series puts a small coastal community at the mercy of something moving beneath the waves.
Netflix’s ‘Below’ comes from creator Jesse McKeown and is led by Josh Hartnett, Charlie Heaton, and Mackenzie Davis. With the premiere days away, here is a clear look at the release date, release time, trailer, cast, and plot, based on what Netflix and other outlets have confirmed so far.
‘Below’ Release Date and Release Time on Netflix
Netflix has scheduled the six episode series for Thursday, October 8. Netflix’s own editorial site Tudum lists the same October 8 arrival. That makes it one of the more notable thrillers on the platform’s early October calendar.
Netflix has not been widely quoted giving a unique time for this series, so the standard schedule is the best guide. Netflix original shows and films are typically released globally at midnight Pacific Time, according to the Netflix Media Centre. That means viewers on the US West Coast can expect the series right as October 8 begins.
In England the same drop lands at 8 am British Summer Time, while US Central and Eastern viewers see it on the morning of the release date. Audiences in India, South Korea, Japan, and eastern Australia typically get new titles in the afternoon. Netflix also notes that viewers may need to refresh the app or restart their device to see a newly released title.
‘Below’ Trailer and Toronto Premiere
Netflix released the official trailer and new key art ahead of the series’ world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. There, ‘Below’ is serving as the opening night selection for the festival’s Primetime program. That festival slot signals real confidence in a project that could easily have been treated as seasonal genre fare.
The earliest footage came before that. The first preview for the series was released in late July. It painted a grim and ominous picture of a mysterious monster in the water. Netflix had already shared first look images on July 14.
The marketing has leaned on mood rather than spectacle. One report on the teaser noted that it relies on unease rather than loud scares. German outlet Filmstarts observed that the first trailer promises atmospheric dread without showing the creature at all.
‘Below’ Cast and Characters
Josh Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda Howander, and Charlie Heaton plays Wade Penney. Tudum points to Hartnett’s work in ‘Trap’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, Heaton’s role in ‘Stranger Things’, and Davis’s credits on ‘Station Eleven’ and ‘Speak No Evil’. It is a lead trio with plenty of genre and prestige experience between them.
The Penney family is rounded out by Ruby Stokes as Mary, Rohan Campbell as Jay, and Willow Kean as Ruth, with Kaleb Horn appearing as Noah. Natasha Henstridge and Joshua Close are also part of the ensemble. The size of the family cast suggests the human drama will carry as much weight as the monster story.
McKeown created the series and serves as showrunner, and Hartnett is among the executive producers alongside Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall. That gives the lead actor a hand in shaping the project beyond his performance.
‘Below’ Plot and Newfoundland Setting
Netflix describes Calvin as a stubborn but warm hearted fisherman in a small Newfoundland town who is still haunted by his father’s mysterious death decades earlier. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing the town, he has to work to keep the community together. The personal wound and the external threat are clearly designed to feed each other.
Calvin is determined to protect his son Wade and the rest of his family, so he teams up with a visiting marine researcher played by Davis to confront the creature and uncover the island’s buried secrets. Netflix says the story blends local myth, suspense, and humour while exploring family, community, and change. That mix points to a thriller with more texture than a standard monster hunt.
The location is central to the identity of the show. The series was filmed on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Speaking with Tudum, McKeown described the region as a great place for “something big and something kind of epic.”
One preview describes the ocean itself as the real antagonist, which would make ‘Below’ one of Netflix’s more grounded creature thrillers. If the trailer’s decision to hold back the creature carries into the series, would you rather the mystery around Calvin’s father stay at the center of ‘Below’, or should the monster take over once the town starts to fight back?
