Netflix Cancels ‘Sweet Magnolias’ as Streamer Moves Ahead With ‘Ladies of the House’

Netflix has opted not to renew ‘Sweet Magnolias’ for a sixth season, closing the book on the drama after five seasons and 50 episodes. The news was first reported by Deadline and arrived alongside an order for a new series from the same creative team. For viewers who spent years in Serenity, the Netflix cancels ‘Sweet Magnolias’ story carries both disappointment and a measure of continuity.

The series was based on the book series by Sherryl Woods and followed three lifelong friends who also co-own a spa in their South Carolina hometown. The decision came just three months after the fifth season arrived. Here is what is known about the cancellation, the reasoning behind it, and what comes next.

Sweet Magnolias Cancellation Reason

According to reporting that credits Deadline with breaking the story, Netflix treated the situation as an either or choice between a sixth and final season and a new series. Netflix chose to prioritize the new show over another season of ‘Sweet Magnolias.’ That means the show was not given a proper farewell season to tie up its storylines.

The timing was tight, because options on the cast members were set to expire on the same Thursday night the new series received its order. The show also remained in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English language series for three weeks after its latest season debuted.

Viewership had reportedly declined during the fourth and fifth seasons. Spanish outlet Espinof noted that the second season opened with 5.1 million views in its first weekend, while the fifth season managed 2.8 million. That slow slide gives context to a decision that still stung for many fans.

Sweet Magnolias Season 6 Will Not Happen

The show’s writers shared a parting message on Instagram thanking fans, cast and crew after the news broke. The message stressed that the friends of Serenity will always be there for viewers who need them. All five seasons remain available to stream on Netflix.

Netflix is not known for ordering many seasons of most of its scripted series, which makes a five season run a notable one. The show was produced in the Atlanta area, and local coverage framed the cancellation as another long running series lost to the region.

Some commentators have questioned whether Netflix should have treated the fifth season as the finale so fans could receive some kind of closure. That question lingers because the cancellation came after the season had already aired.

Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Ending

The fifth season ended on a sour note, with Dana Sue suggesting that she and Ronnie take a break from their marriage. That decision followed her discovery that his negligence was responsible for their house burning down. An old enemy named Clark Bellson, played by John Gabriel Rodriquez, was already showing interest in her.

Most of the main characters received effectively happy endings in the finale, with the exception of Dana Sue and Ronnie. The season was filmed during the spring and summer of 2025 and debuted on June 11. At the time, it ranked as the second most watched series on the streamer, even though its future was still undecided.

Because no sixth season will follow, that unresolved marriage storyline now stands as the show’s final note. It is an unusually open ending for a series that built its reputation on warmth.

Ladies of the House Replaces the Drama

Netflix has ordered a drama called ‘Ladies of the House,’ led by ‘Sweet Magnolias’ star JoAnna Garcia Swisher and created with showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson. The series follows a wife and two adult daughters who take over a family winery after the owner’s death. They must work through their issues with each other to face challenges involving the business, their extended family and the men in their lives.

The project is loosely based on a novel by Lauren Edmondson, and Anderson will executive produce with Garcia Swisher and Kate Gordon. Anderson described Netflix as her creative home for seven years and said she could not imagine a better place to tell this story. There is no word yet on when the new series will reach viewers.

For longtime fans, the new drama offers a chance to follow familiar talent into different territory. Whether a winery family can fill the space left by the women of Serenity is a question worth debating, so tell us in the comments if you will give ‘Ladies of the House’ a chance or if Dana Sue’s unresolved marriage keeps you wishing ‘Sweet Magnolias’ had received one last season.
