Everything to Know About the Cast of Netflix’s ‘Below’ (With Photos)

The six part limited series ‘Below’ makes its global debut on Netflix on October 8, with Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton leading the way. Created by Jesse McKeown, the thriller follows a small Canadian town that becomes the target of a mysterious sea creature. The terrorized residents must find the strength to protect their community and a vanishing way of life.

The Netflix ‘Below’ cast mixes familiar faces from some of the streamer’s biggest series with a few rising names. Netflix has already released first look photos of the ensemble. Here is a look at who plays whom and where viewers may have seen them before.

Josh Hartnett

Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, the character at the center of the story. Calvin is described as a single father of three who is desperate to keep his fractured family together.

The trailer finds Calvin hard at work on his boat when a huge mass begins moving toward him just below the surface of the water. Hartnett is also credited as one of the executive producers on the series.

Netflix describes the show as a suspenseful thriller featuring high stakes mystery and rich family drama. The streamer has also clarified that the series is not supernatural.

Mackenzie Davis

Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher who teams up with Calvin to figure out what is happening in town. Her outsider perspective gives the series a scientific counterweight to the fishing community’s fear.

Viewers may recognize Davis from leading the cast of ‘Station Eleven’ and from her recent role opposite James McAvoy in ‘Speak No Evil.’ She is also known for ‘Halt and Catch Fire,’ and to Netflix subscribers she will always be Yorkie from the ‘Black Mirror’ episode ‘San Junipero.’

The first look gallery includes a shot of Davis and Hartnett together as Fonda and Calvin. It offers an early sense of how the two characters will share the screen.

Charlie Heaton

Charlie Heaton plays Wade Penney, who is Calvin’s son. That places him inside the family drama that Netflix says sits at the heart of the series.

Heaton is best known for his work on ‘Stranger Things.’ His casting adds another recognizable name from the streamer’s own catalog to the lineup.

Netflix has released images of Heaton as Wade from both the first and final episodes of the season. The spread suggests his character remains part of the story from beginning to end.

Ruby Stokes

Ruby Stokes plays Mary Penney. She and Rohan Campbell round out the Penney family as Mary and Jay.

Stokes is known for her role in ‘Lockwood & Co.’ The series gives her a different kind of genre setting, grounded in a working coastal community rather than a haunted London.

She appears in the first look photos alongside Campbell and Kaleb Horn, as well as in a group shot with Heaton and Willow Kean. Those images show the Penney siblings together as a unit.

Rohan Campbell

Rohan Campbell plays Jay Penney. Jay is part of the family whose bond is tested as the threat in the water grows.

Campbell may be recognized as Lonergan from ‘Virgin River.’ He also appeared in ‘The Hardy Boys.’

Campbell is pictured with Stokes in one of the first look photos and again with Horn and Stokes in another. He is also in the group image featuring all four Penney siblings.

Willow Kean

Willow Kean plays Ruth Penney, one of Calvin’s family members. Her character rounds out the household at the center of the series.

Kean is known for her work on ‘Hudson & Rex.’ The role gives her a place in a high profile Netflix ensemble.

Netflix has shared an image of Kean as Ruth from the fourth episode of the season. She also appears in a solo first look photo.

Kaleb Horn

Kaleb Horn plays Noah. Horn is known for ‘The Vampire Lestat.’

He appears in a first look photo with Campbell and Stokes. Natasha Henstridge and Joshua Close fill out the rest of the cast.
