Chris Hemsworth Hits the Pads in Thailand as ‘Extraction 3’ Filming Continues
Few action franchises have taken off on Netflix quite like ‘Extraction’. The first film launched in April 2020 with Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a former Australian special forces soldier turned black ops mercenary, and it became known for a breathless 12-minute “one-shot” action sequence.
The sequel raised the stakes. ‘Extraction 2’ arrived in June 2023 and earned even stronger reviews, scoring around 80% on Rotten Tomatoes compared with the original’s 67%.
Now Hemsworth is giving fans a glimpse of the work behind the third chapter. In a new video shared on Instagram, the actor revealed he is shooting ‘Extraction 3’ in Thailand and has been training on pads with a close friend, thanking him in the caption.
The short clip shows Hemsworth throwing kicks and strikes at pads held by his trainer inside a gym, complete with a boxing ring in the background. It’s a reminder of the physical demands that come with playing Tyler Rake.
Hemsworth has a long history of intense physical preparation for roles. Earlier this summer, he shared another clip showing his training and confirmed that filming was only a couple of weeks away.
The road to ‘Extraction 3’ has been lengthy. Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave announced the third film on stage at Netflix’s TUDUM event in 2023, but production was delayed, largely because of Hemsworth’s busy schedule with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Kockroach’.
Cameras finally started rolling in July 2026, with filming expected to continue into early October. Earlier reports said the production would be based mainly in Sydney, Hemsworth’s home country, with additional filming in Europe.
Hemsworth’s latest post shows that Thailand is part of the shoot as well. That marks a return to familiar territory, since the first film used locations in Thailand, including Ban Pong in Ratchaburi, to recreate the streets of Dhaka.
Hargrave returns as director, while David Weil takes over screenwriting duties. The Russo Brothers’ AGBO banner is producing again, along with Hemsworth’s company Wild State, run by Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson.

Hemsworth is officially reprising his role as Rake. Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani are also returning to the franchise. Plot details are still under wraps. Based on the first 2 films, fans can expect Rake to take on another seemingly impossible mission.

Netflix isn’t stopping with a trilogy. ‘Mercenary: An Extraction Series’, starring Omar Sy, completed principal photography in March 2026 after filming in Ireland and Morocco. There’s also a South Korean spin-off film titled ‘Tygo’, which wrapped production in March 2026. Together, these projects show how much Netflix is investing in the franchise.
The original film has also continued to perform well. Earlier this year, ‘Extraction’ climbed back up Netflix’s global charts as fans revisited Rake’s first mission. With filming scheduled to wrap this fall, ‘Extraction 3’ isn’t expected to land on Netflix before 2027.
Hargrave has previously pointed to a 2027 release, and reports suggest a summer or fall debut is likely. In the meantime, Hemsworth’s training videos are giving fans an early taste of the action. If the clips are any sign, Tyler Rake is returning in top fighting form.
