Apple TV’s ‘Matchbox The Movie’ Release Date, Trailer, Cast and Plot Explained

‘Matchbox The Movie’ arrives on Apple TV on October 9, and it marks Mattel’s next major film push after ‘Barbie’. Apple set the premiere date and released three first look images, and the project is the next Mattel release since Greta Gerwig’s Oscar winning ‘Barbie’ in 2023. The film is a live action feature inspired by the company’s miniature vehicle brand.

Apple describes it as an action packed, globetrotting adventure led by John Cena as an undercover CIA agent. Mattel Studios is expanding its slate of live action features with the project. Here is what is known so far about the release, the footage, the ensemble and the story.

‘Matchbox The Movie’ Release Date on Apple TV

Apple TV said it will begin streaming the film globally on October 9. Mattel announced the premiere date and first look images on February 3, 2026. The film will be available to Apple TV subscribers at no additional cost.

The decision to skip theaters has drawn some commentary. T3 noted that heading straight to Apple TV instead of cinemas is not the best sign, though more trailers may clarify the picture. A streaming debut does give the film a built in audience of subscribers on day one.

The release also fits a wider Mattel strategy. Mattel combined its film and television units into Mattel Studios in 2025, and its other toy inspired projects include an animated ‘Bob the Builder’ movie and a live action ‘Masters of the Universe’ film. Apple’s release aims to build on post ‘Barbie’ momentum as Hollywood hunts for familiar brands with global pull.

‘Matchbox The Movie’ Trailer Debuts at San Diego Comic Con

Apple unveiled the official trailer during the film’s San Diego Comic Con presentation. The reveal confirmed that a movie about the die cast cars many people owned as children is very much real.

The footage leans into action comedy. One moment has a villain threatening to throw Cena’s agent and his friends from a plane, which earns a dry reply from Sam Richardson, while quick cuts move between childhood toy chaos and grown up car crashes. Some viewers found the trailer reminiscent of a new ‘Fast and Furious’ entry. The friends also mention pulling off stunts the way they once did with their toys, which ties the story back to the brand.

The accompanying stills offer a few more clues. One shows Cena sprinting through gridlock traffic, while another shows a fleet of vehicles speeding down an empty stretch of highway. Cena also spoke at the panel about the intense stunt sequences he performed for the film.

‘Matchbox The Movie’ Cast and Crew

Cena is joined by Arturo Castro, Jessica Biel, Teyonah Parris and Sam Richardson. The ensemble also includes Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll and Bill Camp.

Cast listings name Cena as Sean, Biel as Aimee, Richardson as Crosby, Castro as Ted and Parris as Charmaine. Gurira plays Helen, Stoll plays Moiser, Camp plays Smalley and Farahani plays Robbie. Parris said the cast relished tapping into childhood memories of the palm sized collectibles, while Richardson, an avid Matchbox collector, joked that he wished he could have kept the life size cars used on set.

Behind the camera, the film is directed and executive produced by Sam Hargrave and written by David Coggeshall. Hargrave previously directed ‘Extraction’ and its sequel, and Coggeshall wrote ‘The Family Plan’. The producers are David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance Media, Jules Daly, and Ynon Kreiz and Robbie Brenner for Mattel Studios.

‘Matchbox The Movie’ Plot and Story

The official synopsis follows a group of friends since childhood whose lives are upended when Sean, their long absent former leader, returns to their small town as an undercover CIA agent. He unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world. The setup pairs a spy thriller with a reunion story.

Descriptions of the specific threat vary slightly between outlets. One report says Cena plays a spy who is framed by nuclear terrorists when a nuke is stolen. Another says he must track down a missing warhead with help from his friends. An earlier wire report described Sean as a former soldier who is kidnapped and framed after completing a mission and reuniting with his friends. The official synopsis remains the most reliable guide until the film is released.

The brand itself has a modest origin story. Matchbox was invented in 1953 by Jack Odell to solve a problem for his daughter, who could only take a toy to school if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. Today two Matchbox cars are sold every second somewhere around the world. As ‘Matchbox The Movie’ lands on Apple TV, does a globetrotting spy plot built around a childhood friend group and tiny toy cars sound like the start of a real franchise to you, or does it belong in the toy box?
