Will Smith Heads Back to West Philadelphia With ‘215’, a New Series About His Pre-’Fresh Prince’ Rise
Long before he became one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, Will Smith was a teenager from West Philadelphia with big dreams and a knack for rhymes. That story eventually inspired ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’, the NBC sitcom that ran for 6 seasons and 148 episodes from 1990 to 1996 and turned Smith into a household name.
The franchise has never really gone away. Peacock reimagined it as the drama ‘Bel-Air’, which ran for 4 seasons from 2022 to 2025, became the streamer’s longest-running original scripted program and even featured a cameo from Smith himself in its finale.
Now Smith is returning to the story that launched him, but from a completely different angle. His production company, Westbrook Studios, is developing ‘215’, a new scripted series based on his early life and his rise alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff as the Grammy-winning hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.
The series takes its name from the Philadelphia area code where the duo’s journey began. Rather than following Will’s move to Bel-Air, it goes back to the beginning. The story follows a sharp teenage rapper, the DJ who serves as his musical counterpart, and the friends who help keep the dream alive.
It explores the period when Smith and Jeff Townes were trying to turn early success into something bigger, against the backdrop of Philadelphia’s late-’80s hip-hop scene. Rather than the lighthearted tone of the sitcom, the show is expected to focus on the raw struggles, musical evolution, and community dynamics that shaped the pair. In effect, it flips the familiar ‘Fresh Prince’ premise on its head.
Terence Carter, president of television at Westbrook Studios, said the project is especially meaningful to the company. He explained that it draws on the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince while celebrating Philadelphia during a defining era for hip-hop.
The duo became one of hip-hop’s earliest crossover acts, paving the way for Smith’s move into acting. Fans of the sitcom will remember DJ Jazzy Jeff in the recurring comedic role of Will’s friend Jazz.
‘215’ is the first project announced under a new partnership between Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group. The deal, funded by Sayan Navaratnam’s Malar Group, will finance and develop a slate of film and television projects.
The series is currently in development, with no network, cast, or release date announced yet. It remains unclear whether Smith will appear on screen or stay behind the camera as a producer. The announcement adds to a growing television universe built around Smith’s real-life story.
Alongside the original sitcom and ‘Bel-Air’, a Hilary-focused spinoff headlined by Coco Jones is also on the way. Westbrook, founded by Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Miguel Melendez and Kosaku Yada, has been increasingly active in recent years. Its 2026 slate includes the Disney+ documentary series ‘Pole to Pole’.
The news also arrives as Smith prepares to return to acting. He is set to star in ‘Supermax’, an Amazon MGM Studios prison thriller. For fans, ‘215’ offers a chance to see the story behind the story. It promises to show how a young rapper from Philadelphia laid the groundwork for a career that would eventually take him to Hollywood’s biggest stages.
Online, many fans welcomed the idea of a series exploring the duo’s early days. Some are already speculating about who could play young versions of Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. With ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ still streaming on Hulu and ‘Bel-Air’ available on Peacock, there’s plenty of time for viewers to catch up before ‘215’ arrives.
