‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Are “Pure Madness” With Trackers Comparing It to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Marvel fans have been counting down to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ for months, and the box office world has been watching just as closely. Disney opened general advance ticket sales roughly 4 months before the film’s December 18 release, an unusually early start for a major blockbuster.

The comparison everyone keeps returning to is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. That film broke the all-time domestic opening-day record with $168 million on July 31, opened to roughly $360 million domestically, and has since crossed $2 billion worldwide.

Now new tracking data suggests ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ presales still aren’t losing steam. In a widely shared post on r/boxoffice, tracker TheFlatLannister described the film’s ticket sales as pure madness, noting that, unlike most blockbusters of its size, ‘Doomsday’ simply isn’t slowing down.

The tracker compared ‘Doomsday’ at 71 days out with ‘Brand New Day’ at various points before its release. In one sample, labeled MTC1, ‘Doomsday’ Friday sales were running around where ‘Brand New Day’ was 12 days before opening.

Its Saturday sales were tracking near ‘Brand New Day’ at 9 days out, while preview sales matched ‘Brand New Day’ at 19 days out. A second sample, MTC3, showed similar results, with Friday near 13 days out, Saturday near 11, and Sunday near 10.

According to the tracker, there are no signs that sales are front-loaded. That could mean a strong internal multiplier, as early excitement spills over into the rest of opening weekend.

The momentum has been building since presales opened. After just 2 days, TheWrap reported that ‘Doomsday’ was running about 65% ahead of the pace ‘Brand New Day’ set in its first 2 days.

By August 19, tracking firm Global Box Office had total presales at $35 million. A few weeks later, the same account reported domestic presales had crossed $55 million with 3 months still to go, and on October 6, a tracker said worldwide presales had passed $100 million.

Still, ‘Brand New Day’ remains a formidable benchmark. The film reportedly reached $150 million in advance sales by the Thursday before its opening, ahead of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $130 million and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at $78 million.

It also earned $72 million from its Wednesday evening and Thursday preview screenings. Some tracking suggests ‘Doomsday’ previews could land in a similar range, with $60 million to $70 million considered possible.

There’s an important caveat. ‘Brand New Day’ only began selling tickets about 45 days before release, while ‘Doomsday’ has had a much longer runway. Because no major blockbuster has launched presales this early, analysts warn that direct comparisons are imprecise. Presales also measure intention rather than guaranteed turnout.

Projections vary widely as a result. Global Box Office has suggested a domestic opening between $260 million and $300 million, while some more optimistic estimates have floated even bigger figures.

The film carries enormous expectations. With a budget reportedly approaching $400 million, ‘Doomsday’ will need a massive run to justify its cost. It also faces competition from Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’, which opens the same day and holds exclusive IMAX access through the holidays.

Even so, overseas tracking suggests ‘Doomsday’ is keeping pace with ‘Brand New Day’ internationally and leaving ‘Dune: Part Three’ behind. For now, the data paints a picture of steady, sustained demand.

If the trend continues, ‘Doomsday’ could challenge ‘Brand New Day’ for the biggest opening weekend of all time. With just over 2 months to go, every new tracking update is sure to spark fresh debate among fans and analysts alike.

Do you think ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can beat ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ for the biggest opening weekend ever?
