Ben Affleck Finally Settles a Long-Running ‘Gone Girl’ Shower Scene Rumor
More than a decade after its release, ‘Gone Girl’ remains one of the most talked-about thrillers of the 2010s. David Fincher’s 2014 adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel starred Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, a husband who becomes the prime suspect after his wife, Amy, played by Rosamund Pike, mysteriously disappears.
The film was packed with shocking twists, but one brief moment late in the story has fueled curiosity for years. When Amy returns home covered in blood, she steps into the shower and insists Nick join her, demanding he undress completely to prove he isn’t wearing a wire.
Now Affleck has addressed the speculation head-on. In a new Variety cover story, the 54-year-old actor confirmed he did not wear a prosthetic for the full-frontal shower scene, finally putting a long-running rumor to rest.
Affleck went a step further, revealing he has only ever worn a prosthetic once in his film career. That was for the 2006 drama ‘Hollywoodland’, and it was simply a nose. His candid answer quickly spread online after Variety shared the comment on X. Page Six also highlighted the revelation, which reignited conversations about the scene and Affleck’s willingness to commit to the role.
Affleck has long spoken about his admiration for Fincher. In a separate Letterboxd interview, he said he was willing to do anything the director asked of him, including appearing naked on screen.
He has also described working with Fincher as the great privilege of his life. During the film’s original promotion, Affleck joked about the scene, revealing that Fincher had promised the camera wouldn’t show too much.
The shower sequence is one of the film’s most unsettling moments, largely thanks to Pike’s chilling performance as Amy. Affleck admitted to Variety that he is still somewhat afraid of his former co-star, years after making the film.

Pike’s portrayal of Amy earned widespread acclaim and remains one of the most memorable villain performances of the decade. That eerie energy clearly left a lasting impression on her co-star.

The confession has sparked plenty of lighthearted reactions online. Some fans joked that the mystery had finally been solved, while others playfully refused to believe him. Some questioned why the topic still matters more than a decade later.
Still, for many ‘Gone Girl’ fans, Affleck’s answer offers a definitive end to one of the film’s most persistent pieces of trivia. The interview arrives as Affleck promotes his latest project, ‘Animals’, a political crime thriller he directed, co-wrote, and stars in.
He plays a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped, forcing him and his wife to navigate a web of deception to raise a ransom. Kerry Washington co-stars as his wife, with Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun and Ray Fisher also in the cast. The screenplay was written by Affleck alongside Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray.

‘Animals’ arrives on Netflix and in select theaters on October 9. Interestingly, some early discussion has already compared its themes to ‘Gone Girl’, though the 2 films take very different storytelling approaches.

‘Gone Girl’ continues to resonate with audiences, thanks to its twisty plot, sharp satire and unforgettable performances. Affleck’s latest comments show just how much the film still sparks curiosity. With ‘Animals’ about to debut, fans will soon see whether his new thriller can generate the same level of conversation.
