Michael Douglas has never been shy about telling a good Hollywood story. Now the 82-year-old actor has gathered a lifetime of them in his candid new memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride’, which hit shelves on October 6 through Grand Central Publishing.

The book traces his journey from the shadow of his father, Kirk Douglas, to his own stardom, including Oscar wins for ‘Wall Street’ and for producing ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. It also covers his battle with stage-4 cancer and his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones, which has lasted more than 25 years.

It is that famous romance that has produced one of the memoir’s most talked-about revelations. According to Douglas, early in their relationship, he had a surprising rival for Zeta-Jones’ attention: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Douglas met the now 57-year-old actress in 1998 at the Deauville American Film Festival in France. He has said he fell for her after watching her in ‘The Mask of Zorro’, released that same year. At first, the couple navigated a long-distance relationship.

Douglas was based in New York, while Zeta-Jones had a home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, located right below Bryant’s house. According to the memoir, the basketball star was a frequent visitor.

Douglas writes that Bryant seemed to keep finding excuses to stop by, joking that he wasn’t sure how many times Bryant “lost his dog,” but that it happened a lot. At the time, Bryant was just 20 years old and had joined the Lakers 2 years earlier. He was 9 years younger than Zeta-Jones, while Douglas is 25 years older than the Welsh actress.

Bryant had not yet met Vanessa Laine, whom he met about a year later while she was still in high school. The couple married in 2001 and went on to have 4 daughters. Interestingly, the dog detail lines up with a memory Zeta-Jones once shared herself.

In a tribute posted on social media after Bryant’s death, she recalled meeting the young athlete on the day he moved in, thanks to his dog wandering into her garden. She also remembered being able to watch his talent from her window. Some readers found Douglas’ version of the tale especially charming because it echoes her own heartfelt recollection.

Whatever Bryant’s intentions may have been, Douglas ultimately won out. He and Zeta-Jones got engaged on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and married about a year later at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Their union was initially met with doubts that it would last, given the age gap between them. Instead, it has become one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories.

The Kobe anecdote is only one of many stories making headlines from the memoir. Douglas also opens up about the abuse he experienced from his father, his struggles with drugs and alcohol, and past affairs.

Rolling Stone described the book as dishy, entertaining, and at times painful, offering a rare window into a lost era of Hollywood glamour and excess. For fans, the playful story about Bryant offers a lighter moment amid those more serious revelations.

Were you surprised to learn that Kobe Bryant may have been Michael Douglas’ unexpected rival for Catherine Zeta-Jones?
