‘Eternally Yours’ comes from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the showrunners who adapted ‘Ghosts’ for American audiences, and Trent O’Donnell directed the pilot. It premiered Thursday on CBS and streams on Paramount+ the next day. The first installment ends on a turn that reshapes the whole premise.

This ‘Eternally Yours’ recap covers how the pilot sets up its vampire household and why its final minutes matter. The episode opens through the eyes of a human, Max, who is happily dating his girlfriend Emma. Spoilers follow for everything that happens.

What Happens in the ‘Eternally Yours’ Premiere Recap

Emma turns out to be a vampire, the daughter of Charles and Liz, who can no longer stand each other after 500 years of marriage. Emma is adopted, and she was turned to save her from diphtheria. She cannot bring herself to tell her parents that her boyfriend is a human employed by the Social Security Administration.

Max shows up at the Blythe doorstep on official business, because someone has been collecting benefits for far too many decades. Max is increasingly frustrated that Emma will not show him where she lives or introduce him to her family. His visit forces the coven to decide what to do with an outsider who is asking the wrong questions.

Charles decides the best way to rekindle his marriage is to kill Max together with Liz. Emma interrupts before it goes too far, and Max learns that her family are vampires. It is a darkly funny setup that gives the pilot its central tension.

The Ending Explained as Max Dies and Is Turned

Max heads for the door, but Liz urges him not to give up on Emma, reminding him that her own romance with Charles once faced opposition. Max then stands up to Charles and says he wants to stay with Emma, and Charles appears to relent. For a few minutes the pilot looks like it is heading toward a conventional happy ending.

Instead, Mort accidentally hits Max with a bust of Charles while practicing his powers, and Max dies. Mort had been struggling with the fact that he has no real powers, and so far he can only tell what the family dog, Argus, is thinking. The accident arrives at the exact moment Max seems safe.

Charles then saves Max by turning him into a vampire, which means he now joins the coven. It is a notable reversal for a man who spent much of the episode trying to get rid of Max.

What Max’s Vampire Transformation Means for Emma and Charles

One review argues that the premiere purposely hides the reveal that Max becomes a vampire and joins her coven after he is accidentally murdered. That shifts the story away from a human teaching a vampire family how to live again and toward Max having to fit into Emma’s world. The change turns a fish out of water comedy into something closer to a family adjustment story.

In an interview with TheWrap, Wiseman explained that turning someone means the coven must take them in, which he described as a very big change. He added that Charles is not the biggest fan of Max dating his daughter, and that it is a major escalation for Emma.

Wiseman noted that the person Emma is dating now lives under the same roof, and that Max will bring a new perspective and question how things are done in the coven. That gives the series a built in source of friction for the episodes ahead.

How Critics and the Blythe Coven Are Setting Up What Comes Next

Critical response to the pilot has been split. The A.V. Club found promise in the show, though it questioned why Max is clued into Emma’s family secret so early. Another review called the series severely anemic and said the vampire rules introduced in the pilot are never explained.

Other writers were more receptive to the gamble. One reviewer said the show proves it is not about to play it safe with its premise, and that this takes guts. Another viewer was unsure how to feel about an ending that completely changes the premise of the series.

The wider coven still has room to grow. Henry received the least attention in the pilot beyond being established as a brooding vampire, and Jesse has more going on than his gym bro appearance suggests. The next installment is titled ‘Baby Vampire’ and is scheduled for October 15.

Max now has to survive eternity under the same roof as a father figure who tried to kill him, so was saving his life the right call for the Blythes, or did Charles take away the one choice Max deserved to make for himself?
