It has been a while since Jessica Biel led a feature film, and even she didn’t realize how long. The actress has spent recent years focusing on television, with credits including ‘Candy’ in 2022 and ‘The Better Sister’ in 2025.

That changes with ‘Matchbox The Movie’, Apple TV’s action-adventure inspired by Mattel’s iconic toy cars. Directed by Sam Hargrave and written by David Coggeshall, the film marks Biel’s return to movies after more than 9 years away.

As the film hit streaming, Biel stepped out for ‘Matchbox’ press, looking polished and understated. New images show the 44-year-old in a black halter-neck top with a softly draped silhouette, paired with dark tailored pants and a belt.

She kept the styling sleek, slicking her hair back into a high ponytail and adding bold statement earrings. Natural light streaming through a large window in one shot gave the look an effortless, editorial feel, while a close-up highlighted her glowing skin and soft makeup.

The look fit right in with a busy promotional run. The cast also celebrated the film’s world premiere at AMC Lincoln Square in New York on October 5, and the stars visited Mexico to greet fans on the red carpet there.

Speaking to PEOPLE at a press event in New York City, Biel admitted the length of her movie break came as a shock. She said she hadn’t realized how long it had been since her last film role and that the gap kind of blew her mind.

She also explained what drew her back. Biel said the script, Hargrave, and the cast all played a role in her decision to sign on. The project gave her plenty of new challenges, too. Preparing for the role required her to go through performance-driven training.

In the film, Biel plays Aimee, an emergency medical technician with a passion for amateur race-car driving. She’s one of a group of childhood friends who reconnect, only for their reunion to take a wild turn when they stumble onto a dangerous international plot and must save the world.

John Cena stars as Sean, an undercover CIA agent, and plays Biel’s love interest in their first on-screen collaboration. Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro round out the core group as Crosby, Charmaine and Ted.

The ensemble also includes Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Golshifteh Farahani, Danai Gurira, Daniel Bernhardt and Randeep Hooda. The film runs 2 hours and 6 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, action and language.

‘Matchbox The Movie’ premiered globally on Apple TV on Friday, October 9. Apple first unveiled the release date and first-look images at its press day at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar back in February. Critics haven’t been especially kind so far. ComingSoon noted that the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is lower than any of the ‘Fast and Furious’ films.

Still, for Biel, the project represents a welcome return to the big-screen action she clearly enjoys. Whether or not reviews warm up, her stylish press appearances prove she’s fully embracing this new chapter.
