Laika’s ‘Wildwood’ has been one of the most anticipated animated films of the year, and its world premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival brought out a starry crowd. Directed by Travis Knight, the stop-motion epic has been in development for well over a decade, with Laika first announcing plans to adapt Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis’s novel back in 2011.

The film’s voice cast is packed with big names. Peyton Elizabeth Lee leads as Prue, alongside Jacob Tremblay, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Tom Waits and Carey Mulligan.

Mulligan was one of the night’s standout arrivals. The 41-year-old British actress walked the red carpet at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, October 11, in an elegant white satin gown.

The long-sleeved, ribbed design featured a wide neckline, softly flared cuffs, and a short flared train. Its subtle shimmer caught the light beautifully under the sunny skies over London.

She styled her long blonde hair in loose curls and accessorized with dazzling gold drop earrings and towering heels. At one point, she slipped on a pair of sunglasses to shield herself from the bright sunshine.

Mulligan appeared in great spirits throughout the evening. She stopped to sign autographs for waiting fans and was all smiles as she reunited with Knight, who looked sharp in a grey double-breasted suit.

The premiere was a major moment for the entire team. Knight has spoken about the film’s lengthy journey to the screen, with production alone stretching across more than 3 years and involving 142,000 individual 3D elements.

In ‘Wildwood’, Mulligan voices Alexandra, the Dowager Governess and one of the film’s central antagonists. The character is a grieving mother, driven by the death of her son to pursue dark ambitions with an army of uniformed coyotes.

The story follows Prue as she ventures into a forbidden forest outside Portland, Oregon, to rescue her baby brother from a murder of crows. She is joined by her classmate Curtis, voiced by Tremblay, as they encounter talking animals, bandits, and powerful figures.

Early reviews have singled out Mulligan’s performance. One critic described her as the standout of an already stellar cast, saying she drives home some of the film’s most powerful scenes.

The film has arrived to overwhelming praise. ‘Wildwood’ debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85 on Metacritic, with many critics calling it Laika’s finest work.

At 2 hours and 12 minutes, it is also the longest stop-motion animated film ever released. Laika has earned Best Animated Feature Oscar nominations for its earlier films, including ‘Coraline’ and ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’, and many believe ‘Wildwood’ could continue that streak.

The premiere caps a big year for the actress. Mulligan also took on a main role in the second season of ‘Beef’, adding to a career that includes ‘Drive’, ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Pride & Prejudice’.

Her ‘Wildwood’ appearance showed a different side of her talents, using only her voice to bring a complex villain to life. Judging by early reactions, it’s a performance audiences won’t soon forget.

‘Wildwood’ will screen at AFI Fest before arriving in theaters in the U.S. and UK on October 23. Fathom Entertainment is handling the U.S. release. With rave reviews and a glamorous premiere behind it, the film is heading into release with plenty of momentum. Mulligan’s elegant white gown made sure the London launch was one to remember.
