China has once again become a crucial battleground for Marvel Studios. After years of muted superhero box office in the country, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened to $121.3 million across its first 5 days there this summer, delivering Hollywood’s strongest superhero debut in China in years.

All eyes have since turned to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, the Russo brothers’ massive crossover arriving in December. Excitement has been building in China for months, with the film named the most anticipated movie of the year on review platform Douban as far back as December 2025.

Now, Disney has confirmed exactly when Chinese audiences will see the film. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will arrive in Chinese theaters on December 16, 2 days ahead of its December 18 release in the U.S.

The studio marked the announcement with an official local poster. The artwork shows Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom looming over a huge lineup of heroes, with the Chinese title translating as ‘Avengers 5’. The poster also highlights a range of premium formats, including IMAX, 3D and Dolby screenings. That variety signals just how big a release Disney is planning for the market.

The film continues to lead the conversation online. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ sits at number 1 on Douban’s list of the most anticipated foreign-language films of the year, ahead of ‘Dune: Part Three’.

It has also been tracking strongly on Maoyan, China’s largest online ticketing platform. At 69 days before release, the film’s “want-to-see” count stood at 253,000, closing in on the 264,000 that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ reached at the same point.

One key advantage in China is access to IMAX screens. Disney confirmed back in July that ‘Doomsday’ would receive IMAX screenings in the country, a notable perk given the situation elsewhere.

In many markets, IMAX is devoting its screens to ‘Dune: Part Three’, which opens on the same day in the U.S. To compensate, Disney created its own premium certification, Infinity Vision, which covers formats like Dolby Cinema, Cinemark XD and Regal RPX.

According to reports, China is one of only a handful of international markets where ‘Doomsday’ will play in IMAX. That could give the film an extra boost in a territory that loves premium formats.

The midweek release before the U.S. debut mirrors Marvel’s past strategy for its biggest team-ups. Fans online quickly pointed out that ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ also received Wednesday releases in China ahead of their American premieres. Expectations are sky-high. Some fans are already predicting record-breaking numbers, though many acknowledge that matching ‘Endgame’ in China will be a tall order.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film follows heroes from 3 distinct universes as they face an existential threat. The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and X-Men all unite to take on Doctor Doom.

Domestically, momentum has been just as strong. Presales crossed $50 million more than 3 months ahead of release, with over 70% of those sales going to Infinity Vision screens. With China opening first, the film’s global rollout will begin with a major test in one of the world’s biggest markets. A strong start there could set the tone for a record-breaking holiday run.

As December approaches, fans across the globe are counting down. For Marvel, a big performance in China would be another sign that the franchise has truly regained its footing.

Do you think ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can match or beat ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at the Chinese box office?
