‘The Housemaid’ Star Amanda Seyfried (40) Reveals She Turned Down a TV Role Over Its Sex Scenes
Amanda Seyfried has spent more than 2 decades navigating Hollywood. She got her start on soap operas like ‘As the World Turns’ and ‘All My Children’ before breaking out at 18 as Karen Smith in ‘Mean Girls’, later starring in ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Lovelace’, and earning acclaim as Elizabeth Holmes in ‘The Dropout’.
Over the years, her views on intimate scenes have shifted significantly. In a 2014 interview with W magazine, she said she enjoyed filming them, but in 2022 she told Porter she regretted agreeing to nude scenes at 19, explaining she had felt pressure to keep her job and wished intimacy coordinators had been standard back then.
Now, Seyfried has revealed just how firmly she is drawing the line today. Speaking at a panel hosted by Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton, New York, on October 4, the 40-year-old shared that she recently passed on a TV series because it required frequent sex scenes.
Seyfried explained that it didn’t matter who her co-star would have been. She said she simply felt uncomfortable with the idea and isn’t interested in that kind of work at this point in her life.
She left the door open for the future, noting that she might feel differently if a similar project came along later. For now, however, she said she doesn’t want to deal with being naked in front of a stranger. Seyfried admitted that intimate scenes once felt like no big deal. She joked with Baldwin that, earlier in her career, it felt like getting paid to make out with an attractive person.
As she has gotten older, though, she said the job has started to feel stranger. Sometimes those scenes can be great, she explained, but other times they are simply uncomfortable. A big part of her shift comes from family. Seyfried shares daughter Nina, 9, and son Thomas, 6, with her estranged husband, Thomas Sadoski, and she noted that her kids now pay attention to what she does.
She also said becoming a mother has made her more comfortable setting boundaries. According to Seyfried, she is getting better at saying no. That mindset isn’t entirely new. Back in 2018, she told PorterEdit that having a daughter made her feel more empowered, including when it came to pushing back on revealing scenes.
Seyfried can afford to be selective, as her career is thriving. She recently told Us Weekly that this is the most she has ever worked since having 2 kids, adding that she has never had 2 movies come out at the same time before. Among her current projects is ‘The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd’, directed by Tim Blake Nelson. Her packed schedule shows that turning down one role hasn’t slowed her down.
Seyfried’s comments add to an ongoing industry conversation about consent and comfort on set. The rise of intimacy coordinators has given actors more support, but many performers are still deciding for themselves where their limits lie.
Her honesty has resonated with fans, many of whom praised her for prioritizing her own comfort. It’s a reminder that even established stars continue to reassess what they want from their careers.
Whether Seyfried will ever take on a similar role again remains to be seen. She has made it clear that her answer could change with time. For now, she is focusing on projects that feel right for her and her family. And with her career busier than ever, she has plenty of options to choose from.
