‘Terminator’ Star Mackenzie Davis Lands the Role of Big Barda in DC Studios’ ‘Mister Miracle’ Animated Series
Few comic book love stories have earned as much acclaim as the one between Scott Free and Big Barda. Created by Jack Kirby, Mister Miracle first appeared in 1971’s ‘Mister Miracle’ #1, with Big Barda introduced just a few issues later, and their relationship was famously inspired by Kirby’s marriage to his wife, Roz.
Decades later, writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads reinvented the pair in an award-winning 12-issue series that ran from August 2017 to November 2018. That celebrated run is now the foundation for DC Studios’ upcoming animated adaptation, which follows Scott Free as he escapes Granny Goodness’ orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to build a new life on Earth with Barda.
Now the series has found its leading lady. Mackenzie Davis has been cast as Big Barda in the ‘Mister Miracle’ animated series, with DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran revealing the news in an interview with IGN.
Safran also confirmed that Josh Hutcherson will voice Scott Free, making them the first leads announced for the project. Nathan Fillion previously revealed in August that he voices Guy Gardner in the series.
According to Safran, King adapted his own comic entirely by himself, writing all 8 episodes of the series. He noted that King learned a great deal from co-creating and executive producing ‘Lanterns’, and described the result as excellent.
King also serves as showrunner on the project. Earlier this year, he revealed the first key art from the series, featuring Mister Miracle alongside Barda. Davis brings plenty of dramatic and action experience to the part. She is known for ‘Halt and Catch Fire’, ‘Station Eleven’ and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, and she recently starred in Netflix’s record-breaking Canadian thriller ‘Below’.
Big Barda is a formidable warrior, once one of Darkseid’s elite Female Furies before forging a life with Scott. Fans online have also pointed out that Davis is taller than Hutcherson, mirroring the comics, where Barda typically towers over her husband.

Hutcherson, best known for ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’, will voice the master escape artist. The series centers on a married couple trying to live a normal life while caught in a cosmic war between gods.
Safran described the story as a beautiful exploration of survival amid life’s unanswerable questions. That emotional core is a big part of why the comic became such a celebrated read.
The casting could have a much bigger impact on the DCU. James Gunn has previously said that actors cast in major animated projects within this continuity will also play their live-action counterparts, as seen with Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr.
For now, neither Scott nor Barda has been announced for any upcoming DCU movie. Still, many fans are already excited at the prospect of seeing Davis bring the character to life on screen someday.
‘Mister Miracle’ is one of several animated projects in the works at DC Studios, and Safran named it among those furthest along. The 8-episode series does not yet have a premiere date.
With a strong voice cast and King steering the adaptation of his own acclaimed comic, expectations are already running high. Fans will be watching closely for a first look and release window in the months ahead.
Do you think Mackenzie Davis is the right choice to voice Big Barda in DC Studios’ Mister Miracle?
