‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 23 Release Date, Time, Where to Watch, and Preview
The latest season of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ returns Thursday, October 15 at 10/9c on ABC. After months away from Grey Sloan, viewers are about to find out how the hospital copes with a very different staff room.
The Shondaland series extends its record as the longest running hospital primetime drama on TV. This guide covers the premiere time, the streaming options in several countries and what the first previews reveal about where ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ goes next.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Release Date and Premiere Time
The show returns on October 15 following the new season premieres of ‘9-1-1’ and ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ on ABC. ABC has confirmed that the series keeps its Thursday 10pm timeslot for the 2026 to 2027 broadcast season. That makes the premiere a familiar appointment for longtime viewers.
The previous season ended with a finale that aired on May 7, 2026. The gap between seasons was short by streaming standards, but the finale left enough open threads to keep fans talking over the summer.
In Canada, the show airs on CTV at 10pm ET/PT every Thursday, with the premiere set for October 15. International release dates follow, with the UK and Australia getting the premiere the next day, on October 16.
Where to Watch the New Season
US viewers can watch the new episodes on ABC. The broadcast remains the simplest route for anyone who wants to see the premiere as it airs.
In the UK, new episodes land weekly on Disney Plus from Friday, October 16. Disney Plus is also the home of the show in Australia, with episodes streaming on Fridays starting October 16.
Anyone who needs to catch up has options. All previous seasons are available on both Netflix and Hulu. Every season is also on Hulu and on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers.
Those hoping to wait for the new episodes on Netflix will be waiting a while. What’s on Netflix predicts that if the broadcast run wraps in mid to late May 2027, the full season will reach Netflix in the US in June 2027.
Season Preview and the Premiere Episode
The opening hour is titled “Collide,” and the premise is built for a disaster story. After a collision at Sea-Tac sends a surge of critically injured patients to Grey Sloan, the unveiling of the hospital’s controversial new VIP floor is thrown into chaos as doctors race to save lives amid impossible choices. The first teaser shows two planes colliding on the runway.
Catherine Fox, played by Debbie Allen, is introducing the VIP floor alongside Richard Webber, played by James Pickens Jr. Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey is set to return to the hospital just as the chaos begins. Showrunner Meg Marinis told Deadline that the new season would pick up where the finale left off.
The second episode, “We Built This City,” follows the team through a chaotic first day of surgical rotations amid hospital renovations, while Meredith spends time with Amelia. Benson Kwan, played by Harry Shum Jr., was fired for breaking protocol, although he makes a brief appearance in the trailer.
Meredith is also preparing for a new chapter of her life after agreeing to marry Nick. That personal storyline gives the season a counterweight to the large scale emergencies at the hospital.
Cast Changes Shaping the Story
Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver exited at the end of the previous season, leaving Grey Sloan without a trauma attending and a chief of surgery. Owen left Seattle to join Teddy after she accepted a new job in Paris.
Marinis has been candid about the consequences. In a conversation with TV Insider, she said the hospital would have to rebound from losing two exceptional attendings and that “It will not be an easy adjustment.”
The returning core includes Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey and James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber. Their presence gives the series continuity while the departures force the writers to rebuild the hospital’s leadership.
The show averaged 2.213 million viewers per episode last season and logged 40.9 billion minutes watched across platforms in 2025. ABC has also announced an untitled spinoff, though a premiere date has not been revealed. Now that Grey Sloan has lost both its chief of surgery and a trauma attending, do you think the hospital can truly rebound after the runway collision, and who should step into the gap, tell us in the comments.
