Hilary Swank has spent decades keeping fans guessing about her next move, and this week she delivered an announcement nobody saw coming. The 2-time Oscar winner is expecting her third child with husband Philip Schneider, whom she married in August 2018 in California.

She broke the news on Instagram on Wednesday with a playful animated video of glowing stick figures dancing to Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” with one figure holding a smaller one. In the caption, she joked that people had been asking what her next project would be, and that this one releases in December.

A day later, the actor was already out and about. Swank was photographed in New York City on Thursday, October 15, smiling and waving to photographers as she headed to an interview, showing her baby bump publicly for the first time since the announcement.

The interview was with ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’, where Swank visited CBS Studios for a taping. She looked relaxed and happy as she arrived and left the building. She paired a white top and light blue wide-leg jeans with a cheerful chunky cardigan in yellow, pink, lilac and sky blue. Her long waves and easy smile matched the upbeat mood of the week.

The episode doesn’t air until October 20, but Swank’s comments from the taping are already making waves. Speaking with Barrymore, she addressed the criticism women often face for becoming mothers later in life, according to Page Six.

“There’s a lot of backlash women get for having children later but not men, which is interesting,” Swank said. Barrymore agreed, calling the double standard weird and noting that men have babies well into their later years.

Swank also recalled a woman who told her she was too old to have children. She said she related to that criticism through her late father, who was one of her favorite people. “I would rather be born and have that person that was my favorite person and experience that than not at all,” she explained.

The new baby will join big siblings Aya and Ohm, Swank’s twins, who were born in April 2023. She first revealed that she was pregnant on ‘Good Morning America’ in October 2022, when she was 48. When the twins arrived, she shared on social media that the journey wasn’t easy, but that it was worth it. She has since described them as a blessing.

In a past interview with Women’s Health, Swank reflected on becoming a mother later than she once imagined. She said she hadn’t actively planned to wait, and that she feels more patient and understanding as a parent now. She also revealed that she froze her eggs roughly 10 years before this latest pregnancy.

The response to her announcement has been overwhelmingly warm, with fans flooding her post with congratulations. Plenty of commenters also enjoyed the clever caption, which framed the baby as her next big release.

Her candid comments on Barrymore’s show have added another layer to the conversation. By naming the double standard so directly, Swank has turned a personal milestone into a wider discussion about how women’s choices are judged. With a December arrival hinted at and her talk show appearance still to come, Swank’s very personal production is one fans will be following closely in the weeks ahead.

Do you agree with Hilary Swank that women face a double standard for having children later in life?
