What the Early Episodes of ‘VisionQuest’ Suggest About Its Central Characters
‘VisionQuest’ ends a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’, and it finds Paul Bettany’s android questioning who he is. The series follows the rebuilt White Vision, who took on the memories of the version Wanda Maximoff created before flying off to parts unknown.
Marvel has been selective about what it confirms, which has left plenty of room for ‘VisionQuest’ character theories. Much of the conversation centers on a young man named Thomas Shepherd, on Billy Maximoff, and on whether Wanda will appear at all. Here is what the reporting supports so far and what remains rumor.
Vision’s Identity Crisis Drives the Story
Showrunner Terry Matalas told Empire that this is the first time audiences watch Vision lead the narrative and work out who he is and who he thinks he used to be. Matalas described the arc as an identity crisis and compared it to a Vision movie. That framing matters because it makes the character’s own doubts the central mystery.
At a convention in August 2025, Matalas compared Vision’s journey to Spock’s in ‘Star Trek IV’. That comparison points toward a character who struggles to reconnect with memories that technically belong to someone else. Marvel itself has noted that this Vision is not exactly the same being who fought alongside the Avengers.
Part of the story unfolds in an internal virtual reality where Ultron, EDITH, DUM-E and U appear as human avatars, and Bettany says they are there to help him. The same feature notes that Vision also uses this space to keep the world and himself at arm’s length. James Spader’s return as Ultron is among the biggest pieces of that setup.
The Thomas Shepherd Theory and Tommy Maximoff
Marvel’s official description calls Thomas a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son reincarnate. Footage shown at New York Comic Con presented Ruaridh Mollica’s character as the grown version of Wanda and Vision’s son Tommy. The wording leaves little doubt about where the story is heading.
Den of Geek reports that the second episode explains how the drowning of young Thomas allowed Tommy’s spirit to find a new host. That mirrors the way Billy’s spirit settled into the body of Billy Kaplan in ‘Agatha All Along’. The parallel suggests the trilogy has been building toward this reveal for some time.
Paladin kidnaps Thomas, and Vision takes the bait in order to rescue him, which starts their journey together. Thomas has also shown bursts of superspeed, the power that makes Tommy the hero called Speed in the comics. Den of Geek expects him to become Speed at some point in the show.
Billy Maximoff and the Reunion Theory
At the end of ‘Agatha All Along’, Billy joined forces with the ghost of Agatha Harkness to find his brother. That unfinished thread is the main reason a Billy appearance feels plausible. Viewers have been waiting to see how the two storylines meet.
Some fans have theorized that ‘VisionQuest’ will end with Tommy and Billy reuniting. One outlet reported that Agatha was removed from the series and that Billy would appear instead. Neither claim has been confirmed by Marvel, so both should be read as speculation.
Another report claimed the series serves as a starting point for a loose adaptation of the comic run The Children’s Crusade, with a previous MCU character appearing near the end. In the comics, Wiccan’s belief that he and Speed are soul twins leads the Young Avengers to search for the Scarlet Witch. That context explains why the rumor has traveled, even if the show may take a different route.
Wanda Maximoff Appearance and Ending Speculation
One outlet advises viewers not to expect the long awaited reunion between Wanda and Vision. Matalas has also sidestepped questions about whether Wanda will appear. Neither response closes the door entirely, but neither opens it either.
Earlier, a scooper claimed the production was testing multiple endings, including one with Ghost Agatha and Billy and another involving Wanda. SuperHeroHype cautioned that Marvel Studios had not confirmed that any of those characters would return. That caution still applies to every ending theory in circulation.
What can be said with confidence is that ‘VisionQuest’ has placed Vision, Thomas and the unresolved Maximoff family at the center of its story. If you believe Thomas Shepherd’s flashes of speed point toward a Tommy and Billy reunion before Vision’s journey ends, tell us in the comments whether you think Wanda belongs in that final scene.
