How ‘VisionQuest’ Fits Into Marvel’s Road to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

‘VisionQuest’ arrived on Disney+ with a two episode premiere, and the series occupies a distinctive place on the Marvel calendar. The studio has positioned it as the final live action Marvel series before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which makes every detail around it worth examining.

That placement raises an obvious question about how much ‘VisionQuest’ will matter to the film that follows. Marvel has not answered it directly, but cast comments, studio descriptions and early reception together paint a fairly clear picture of where Vision stands as the story moves toward the next Avengers chapter.

Where ‘VisionQuest’ Sits in the Marvel Release Calendar

The series runs for eight episodes, with releases spread across October and November on Disney+. That schedule places its conclusion close to the arrival of the next major Avengers film. For viewers following the MCU in release order, the proximity is hard to miss.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the duo who helmed ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and it opens in theaters on December 18. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ follows in December of the next year. Vision’s story therefore sits at the front of a two film stretch that Marvel has already mapped out.

What the Early Episodes of ‘VisionQuest’ Suggest About Its Central Characters

The studio has described ‘VisionQuest’ as the final installment of the story that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along’. Paul Bettany has echoed that framing, calling the series the end of a trilogy of sorts. That language suggests the show is meant to close a chapter rather than simply serve as a setup piece.

Even so, Marvel has not officially confirmed that the series leads directly into the events of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The exact year in which the film takes place has not been confirmed either, though coverage points toward the series happening first.

What Paul Bettany Has Said About Vision’s Future in the Next Avengers Films

Bettany has been asked about his return repeatedly, and his answers have been careful. In a conversation with GamesRadar+, he continued to dodge the question and said it was for Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito to decide. That response neither confirms nor rules out an appearance.

On the podcast ‘Happy Sad Confused’, he offered a little more. He said he is pretty sure he will show up in either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, while acknowledging that Marvel could change its plans at any moment. He has not been confirmed for the cast of the film itself.

A separate interview pushed the conversation toward the later film. Bettany answered “I think so” when asked about appearing, and the coverage framed him as expecting to be part of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. That tracks with the broader pattern of cautious optimism in his public remarks.

He also explained why he treats such plans with caution. He recalled that the cast of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ learned about their characters’ deaths on the day those scenes were filmed. Given that history, his reluctance to promise anything about Vision’s next appearance reads as experience rather than evasion.

How the ‘VisionQuest’ Story Sets Up Vision’s Next Chapter

Bettany returns as Vision and James Spader reprises his role as Ultron, in a series created for television by Terry Matalas and based on the Marvel Comics. The ensemble also includes Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan and James D’Arcy, among others. The scale of the cast suggests a production built to carry real narrative weight.

The premise places Vision in an unsettled position. When the series begins, Vision has been rebooted, has escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, and has been living in hiding. That starting point leaves him separated from the larger Avengers machinery heading into the film.

One analysis notes that Vision remains one of the few major MCU figures whose status has been shaped by memory, death, reconstruction and identity rather than a clean heroic handoff. That makes his path toward a team up film more complicated than that of a typical returning hero. It also gives the character a clear dramatic reason to be handled with care.

Spader’s return as Ultron comes after more than ten years away from the role. One outlet notes that even if Vision does not appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, there is a very good chance he takes center stage in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. The series may therefore be building toward the later film as much as the nearer one.

Critical Reception and Why It Matters for ‘VisionQuest’

The early response has been strong. With 30 verdicts counted, the series was certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 87 percent. The critics consensus says the show investigates the humanity beneath the robot and the point where the artificial becomes real.

Viewers have responded warmly too. After the premiere, the series sat at 85 percent on the Popcornmeter, ranking alongside ‘WandaVision’, ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Moon Knight’ among the best rated MCU streaming series. That audience goodwill gives Vision’s story momentum heading into the winter release.

ScreenRant awarded the series a 9 out of 10, praising its treatment of artificial intelligence characters and its depth on elements already present in Marvel’s film mythology. Marvel Studios and Disney+ have not announced a renewal. That leaves the character’s future tied closely to the Avengers films.

For now, Vision’s place in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ remains an open question, and Bettany’s own comments keep it that way. If Marvel saves his return for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ instead, would that feel like the right payoff for the journey that began in ‘WandaVision’?
