The partnership between Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has quickly become one of the film’s most beloved side stories. Bernthal made his MCU movie debut as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, a role he first played in Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ before headlining his own series and returning for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.

The duo’s history stretches back further than many fans realize. Holland has recalled being in the fourth or fifth round of Spider-Man self-tapes in the spring of 2015, around the same time Bernthal was called in to audition for the Punisher, and Bernthal has said he encouraged Holland to include a stunt in his audition.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, ‘Brand New Day’ arrived in theaters on July 31 as the fourth film centered on Holland’s Peter Parker. The story picks up 4 years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, with Peter living alone after erasing himself from everyone’s memories.

The film’s marketing machine was massive. Its trailer recorded 718.6 million views within 24 hours and became the first movie trailer to surpass 1 billion cumulative views. Now that the film is available digitally, behind-the-scenes footage keeps going viral. The latest clip shows Holland making Bernthal crash out on set.

In the footage, Holland, in the full Spider-Man suit, leans over the hood of a heavily armored vehicle in front of a blue screen while crew members gather around. As Holland playfully slams his hand down, an exasperated Bernthal can be heard swearing that he isn’t going to touch whatever is in front of him, delivering his refusal with a few colorful words.

The armored vehicle may look familiar to fans who followed the production. Unofficial set photos showed Spider-Man landing on an armored tank, and Sony’s own day-one video featured Holland filming a stunt atop what appeared to be a tank careening down a Glasgow street.

The viral moment ties into the film’s home-entertainment rollout. The extras include a featurette called ‘Peter and The Punisher’, which explores the actors’ long-standing off-camera friendship, alongside ‘Goofs, Gaffes and Gags’, ‘Brand New Direction’ and ‘Webs, Wires and Runaway Tanks’.

The gag reel features messed-up takes, production mishaps and a funny exchange between Holland and Bernthal. ‘Brand New Day’ is available digitally now, with 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions due on December 15.

This isn’t the first featurette clip to take off online. Earlier this month, footage shared on October 6 showed Holland joking on set while filming Spider-Man’s near-death scene, quipping that it was fine because he’d already made 4 movies. In the film, Peter is gravely wounded by a shot from Bernthal’s Punisher, who then carries him to a hospital, making Holland’s lighthearted joke all the more striking.

Bringing Frank Castle into a ‘Spider-Man’ movie required some adjustments. Kevin Feige confirmed that the character would have a different tonality than in his TV-MA Disney+ special, keeping the film family-friendly.

The cast also included Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando as Scorpion, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Holland described the production as featuring some of the best action in the series, with most stunts shot in camera. With more extras still making the rounds, fans are clearly enjoying this glimpse at the chaotic chemistry behind one of Marvel’s most anticipated pairings.

Which behind-the-scenes moment from Spider-Man: Brand New Day sounds the funniest?
