When Christopher Nolan announced he was adapting Homer’s epic poem, the question wasn’t whether people would show up. It was whether a $250 million, R-rated, IMAX-shot gamble could possibly justify its price tag.

Three months later, ‘The Odyssey’ has answered that question emphatically. The Universal release opened on July 17 to $264.1 million globally, including $124.5 million domestically, a better debut than ‘Oppenheimer’ and Nolan’s best opening since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

Now the film is still going strong, and box office watchers are noticing. Box Office Forecast posted on October 18 that ‘The Odyssey’ has reached roughly $1.789 billion worldwide, calling it a movie that is still making money almost 3 months in.

Other trackers put it a hair lower. Box Office Watch lists the film at $624.9 million domestic and $1.785 billion worldwide after 94 days, with $1.160 billion coming from international markets, while its Sunday daily gross has dwindled to a trickle at 330 theaters.

The post also delivered a reality check for anyone dreaming of a late surge. Breaking into the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time is out of reach, the account argued, noting that ‘Zootopia 2’ sits too far ahead at $1.870 billion.

Box Office Watch ranks the run 11th among the biggest worldwide totals ever, which matches the eleventh-place standing listed for the film elsewhere. A forecast chart in the post projects a final haul of around $1.8 billion, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 94% from critics and 96% from audiences, and jokes that maybe the film needs an encore after all.

Even outside the top 10, the trophy case is full. ‘The Odyssey’ is Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, passing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at $1.085 billion, and it is Universal’s highest-grossing release of all time, overtaking ‘Jurassic World’.

It is also the highest-grossing R-rated film ever and the second-biggest movie of 2026 behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The film is also IMAX’s biggest release ever with $289.3 million in global IMAX box office, and it is the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.

Strong word of mouth has been the engine. Audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore, and early reviews were around 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, among the best of Nolan’s career.

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said in Variety, “We had the very highest of hopes for ‘The Odyssey’ from the start, but it somehow continues to exceed them.” The film also owns the best second-weekend hold of any $100 million-plus opener, dropping just 27.1%.

The financial picture is just as strong. The $250 million production budget came with around $125 million in marketing, but a $1.78 billion gross leaves a very comfortable margin.

The film also helped Universal become the first studio to cross $4 billion worldwide for 2026. It capped a summer in which Nolan’s epic and ‘Brand New Day’ shared the stage, as Tom Holland appears in both.

The success has reshaped Nolan’s career numbers. His films have now grossed more than $8 billion worldwide, placing him 3rd among the highest-grossing directors of all time, with ‘The Odyssey’ as his top earner.

It also adds new momentum to awards chatter, with Matt Damon leading a cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Mia Goth. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon, the film’s long theatrical run is nearly finished, but its legacy is already secure.

Do you think Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ deserves a spot among the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time?
