Kelsey Asbille’s Possible Return to ‘Marshals’ Remains an Open Question for the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff
Kelsey Asbille’s potential return to ‘Marshals’ has become one of the more persistent questions around the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff. The series premiere revealed that Monica, Kayce Dutton’s wife, died off screen from cancer. That would normally close the door on a character, but the creative team has left it slightly ajar.
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut has suggested Asbille could still appear in some form, though nothing is guaranteed. The conversation has only grown since the show returned for its second season. Here is what has been said so far about whether Monica could ever be seen again.
Why Kelsey Asbille Is Absent From ‘Marshals’
Asbille played Monica Dutton in all six seasons of ‘Yellowstone’ from 2018 to 2024, but did not reprise the role in ‘Marshals’ due to scheduling conflicts. The absence was visible long before the premiere. She was not listed among the cast on the IMDb page for the spinoff and did not appear in any promotional materials.
Hudnut told The Hollywood Reporter that he learned Asbille would be unavailable while he and Taylor Sheridan were brainstorming a Kayce story, and that news “cleared up what that thing was for Kayce.” In other words, Monica’s loss became the emotional engine of the show rather than an afterthought.
Hudnut also said he was not part of the conversations about how Asbille’s departure was resolved, so he could not speak to how or why it played out as it did. That leaves Asbille’s own perspective as the missing piece, since the creative decisions were made around her availability.
Monica Dutton Flashback Possibility
Speaking to TVLine, Hudnut said the production had Asbille’s permission to use her image in the first episode. That detail matters because it shows the door was handled with care rather than closed in anger. It also suggests a working relationship that could be revisited.
Hudnut said a return as a hallucination or a flashback is possible, and described it as “definitely not off the table” while declining to guarantee anything. The language is cautious, but it is not a denial.
He pointed to the fact that Kayce went on spiritual journeys in ‘Yellowstone,’ including time in a sweat lodge, as a sign the series has room for that kind of storytelling. A vision sequence would fit the character’s established history, which makes the idea more plausible than a standard flashback might be.
Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille Reaction
Luke Grimes was the person who told Asbille that Monica would be written out. He said he was heartbroken for himself and for her, and that she took it professionally and understood. The close bond between the two actors gives the situation a personal weight that the plot alone does not capture.
After the second season debuted, Grimes told The Hollywood Reporter he would personally be glad to work with Asbille again, but did not know whether she would be interested in returning to the character. Because Grimes is also an executive producer, his comments carry more than casual weight.
Asbille has not publicly addressed Monica’s death, although she briefly returned to Instagram in March to share photos from Paris Fashion Week. Many fans used the comments to express disappointment over the way her character was handled.
‘Marshals’ Season Two Outlook
The first season ran for 13 episodes and wrapped in late May, and filming on season two began in Park City, Utah, with a premiere planned for the fall. The series also proved to be a success for CBS, drawing 20.4 million multiplatform viewers across its first eight episodes. That kind of performance gives the writers time and room to build out Kayce’s story.
Hudnut told Entertainment Weekly that Monica’s presence and spirit will remain throughout the series, since she is so central to who Kayce is. He has also said that raising Tate as a single father is a big part of Kayce’s journey.
One report on the new season notes that it appears to avoid quickly replacing Monica with a new romantic partner, which keeps her legacy in the foreground. If the writers do decide to bring Asbille back, a dream or a sweat lodge vision seems like the most natural route, so would you want to see Monica return that way or let Kayce carry her memory on his own?
