How ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ Fit Into the Larger ‘Yellowstone’ Universe

The ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ connection starts with a shared origin. ‘Yellowstone’ ended its run of five seasons in December 2024, and ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ are the first two spinoffs to reach screens since. One follows the youngest Dutton son on network television, while the other follows his sister and her husband on streaming.

For viewers trying to understand how the two series relate, the answer is both simple and complicated. ‘Marshals’ features Luke Grimes reprising Kayce Dutton, and ‘Dutton Ranch’ centers on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. They sit side by side in the same story, yet they have not met on screen so far.

Kayce Dutton and the ‘Yellowstone’ Finale

‘Marshals’ begins where Kayce’s story left off. He ended the original series by offering the ranch land to Thomas Rainwater of the Broken Rock Reservation, carving out a small plot for himself, Monica and Tate. Kayce sold the ranch to Rainwater for $1.25 per acre.

The new series treats that decision as a turning point. Kayce, a former Navy SEAL, joins a team of U.S. Marshals charged with solving cases in the area. The official synopsis describes him joining an elite unit with the Yellowstone Ranch behind him.

The loss of Monica shapes much of the drama. Tate is struggling with grief following the death of his mother, which happened between the end of ‘Yellowstone’ and the premiere of ‘Marshals.’ That absence is also the most notable difference for returning viewers, since Monica was last seen sharing life with Kayce and Tate in the finale.

Broken Rock Ties and Familiar Faces

Several familiar names carry the franchise feel into the CBS series. Brecken Merrill returns as Tate, while Gil Birmingham appears as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, both of the Broken Rock Reservation and longtime friends of Kayce. Their presence keeps the land sale and its consequences close at hand.

The links go beyond casting. ‘Marshals’ introduced a former ranch hand from the Dutton property in its tenth episode, a branded member of the Dutton clan who knew the family’s dark secrets. The storyline shows that the show is willing to reach back into the history of the ranch when the plot calls for it.

Even so, the series is not built the same way as its predecessor. ‘Marshals’ is adopting a more traditional, long-running television format rather than the concise, poetic drama of ‘Yellowstone.’ Showrunner Spencer Hudnut has said he hopes to offer enough ‘Yellowstone’ for its viewers and enough kinetic action for CBS viewers.

Beth and Rip Take on Texas in ‘Dutton Ranch’

‘Dutton Ranch’ picks up the other half of the family story. The nine episode first season launched on a Friday in May with two episodes, followed by weekly releases, and also aired on Paramount Network. Beth and Rip fight to build a future far from the ghosts of ‘Yellowstone,’ and collide with a ruthless rival ranch in South Texas.

The new setting separates it from Kayce’s Montana. A tragic event prompts Beth and Rip to move from Montana to Texas with their adopted son, Carter, played by Finn Little. The central conflict pits them against a neighboring ranch run by a character played by Annette Bening.

Some observers see this series as the closer relative of the original. Reports suggest it follows a more typical ‘Yellowstone’ blueprint than ‘Marshals’ does. That contrast gives the franchise two distinct tones running at the same time.

Crossover Talk Between ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’

So far, no official crossover has been announced, but the idea keeps surfacing. Both Hudnut and director David Voros told The Hollywood Reporter they would love to see a Beth and Rip crossover with Kayce, if production schedules align. Kelly Reilly has also said she hopes to work with Grimes again, though her comments suggest he is absent from the first season of ‘Dutton Ranch.’

The calendar has fueled some speculation. TechRadar noted that ‘Dutton Ranch’ began on May 15 while the first season of ‘Marshals’ did not wrap until May 24. Another outlet doubted Kayce would appear, since he seems tied up with his role as a U.S. Marshal in Montana.

What is certain is that the franchise has room to grow. ‘Marshals’ has already been renewed for a second season. With both Kayce in Montana and Beth in Texas still carrying the Dutton name, would you rather see their paths cross in ‘Marshals’ or in a second season of ‘Dutton Ranch,’ and what would you want that reunion to look like?
