‘Dune: Part Three’ Runtime Gets a Surprising Update at AMC

Few movies this year come with the weight of expectation that ‘Dune: Part Three’ carries. Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy has built a reputation for huge scale, immersive sound, and patient storytelling. So when a theater chain adjusts the length of the finale, fans pay attention.

The film closes out the story with an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’. It picks up 17 years after the last chapter, with Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, ruling as Emperor while forces plot against him.

The cast also includes Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia and Robert Pattinson as Scytale, with Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem rounding out the ensemble.

Until recently, the length looked settled. The official IMAX website and AMC both listed the film at 2 hours and 20 minutes when advance tickets went on sale, which would have made it the shortest entry in the trilogy. The first film runs 2 hours and 35 minutes, and ‘Dune: Part Two’ runs around 2 hours and 45 minutes. That figure surprised plenty of fans, who expected a long epic to end the saga.

That picture has now shifted. A post on r/boxoffice shows AMC has updated the runtime for ‘Dune: Part Three’ to 2 hours and 30 minutes, with the page still showing a December 18, 2026 release date. The listing adds 10 minutes to the earlier figure, so the finale would still be the shortest of the three, but only by a smaller margin.

The longer number also appears elsewhere on AMC’s site. The listing for the early Insider Screenings in IMAX 70MM on December 14 shows the same 2 hours and 30 minutes runtime. Theater listings can change before release, and no studio statement on the update appears to have been issued, so treat it as a reported adjustment rather than a locked-in final cut.

For a trilogy built on scale, every minute counts. The finale is expected to lean more into thriller territory and feature more action than the previous two films, according to Villeneuve. A tighter runtime could suit that approach, while an extra 10 minutes might give room for the political intrigue and the character fallout that ‘Dune Messiah’ is known for.

Format is part of the appeal too. The film was shot primarily on 65mm film stock, with some sequences shot on 15/70mm IMAX film and desert scenes captured with IMAX digital cameras. Earlier IMAX details put 71 minutes of the original 140-minute runtime in the format, which means more than half the movie was designed for the largest screens.

Demand already looks strong. Advance IMAX tickets went on sale months ago, and multiple outlets reported sellouts or long queues for the early Insider Screenings on December 14 and 15. Principal photography ran from July to November 2025 in locations including Budapest and Abu Dhabi, giving the production a relatively quick turnaround to meet its December date.

The release will also face stiff competition. ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens the same day as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which sets up one of the biggest box office showdowns of the holiday season.

A longer runtime could slightly reduce the number of daily showings, but fans of the saga rarely seem to mind sitting through more of Arrakis. For now, the 2-hour and 30-minute listing is the number to watch. Whether it holds or shifts again, it’s a small but telling sign that the final cut is taking shape.
