‘Lupin’ Season 3 Recap and Ending Explained: Where Assane Diop Stands Before the Next Chapter
The third season of ‘Lupin’ closed with Assane Diop behind bars and a new threat delivered in a single envelope. Netflix’s own summary says that across the season Assane steals the Black Pearl, wins over the French public, fakes his own death and saves his estranged mother’s life. That is a great deal of ground to cover, which is why a clear ‘Lupin’ recap and ending explained is useful right now.
With the next chapter close at hand, it helps to understand how the story reached this point. Part 4 is set to reach Netflix on October 23, 2026, and continues directly from the dramatic ending that left Assane in custody. Here is how the season played out and what its final scene sets up.
The Season Recap and Assane’s Disappearing Act
The season opens a year after the previous finale, in which Assane recorded Hubert Pellegrini confessing to framing his father and sent the recording to Detective Guedira, leading to Hubert’s arrest. Assane is then living undercover in Marseille, where he has become something of a celebrity and folk hero. His family, however, was not enjoying the same peace.
The media and society at large made life extremely difficult for Claire and Raoul, which pushed Assane to act. The previous season had ended with Assane asking Claire to take Raoul and run away with him, and her refusing. After Claire declined again, Assane chose to fake his own death so that his family could live in peace.
The heists remained the heart of the series. Each one delivered the familiar mix of hiding in plain sight and time jumps that reveal how the plan was built. In one episode Assane disguises himself to join the criminal organization of a man named Cisco, and he steals from a wealthy target using a trick he read in a Lupin novel.
The season also gave the long running rivalry a new shape. Officer Youssef Guedira finally teams up with Assane, in an homage to the Maurice Leblanc story The Red Silk Scarf, and a montage in which the pair build an art dealer persona stands out as one of the season’s best moments. Guedira also reasons that since Lupin never dies, Assane would not die either.
The Ending Explained and How Keller Falls
The season’s central threat was a figure from Assane’s past. Keller was Assane’s old boxing coach, who was jailed for twenty five years, blamed Assane for his fate and kidnapped Assane’s mother, Mariama, to get revenge. That made the climax personal in a way the earlier heists were not.
Assane struck a deal with Keller’s girlfriend, Manon, and got Keller arrested. The move allowed him to protect the people he cared about without a direct confrontation. It was also a reminder that the show rewards patience and misdirection over force.
With Keller out of the picture, Claire and Raoul were united with Mariama for the first time, and Assane then turned himself in. He met the three of them at the train station and handed over a letter explaining his actions.
Netflix’s own explainer describes Assane ending the season in prison after what it calls his most outrageous feat yet. At least he has a full set of Arsène Lupin books to keep him company in his cell. One outlet reads this as a sign that he will need to escape early in the next season.
The Final Scene and the Envelope From the Neighboring Cell
The closing moments recast the season’s tidy resolution. A guard hands Assane an envelope, saying it comes from his neighbor in the next cell. Inside is a photo of Assane as a teenager holding the Arsène Lupin book ‘The Cagliostro’s Revenge.’
The choice of book is pointed. As the title suggests, the story involves an old enemy using someone close to Lupin to take revenge on him. The photo shows that whoever sent it knows Assane’s history well.
Netflix’s explainer notes that viewers can recognize the silhouette of the cigar smoking inmate at the end of the season. Coverage of the series describes the cliffhanger as involving both Assane’s mother and Hubert Pellegrini. One outlet expects Assane to face Pellegrini again and to uncover the truth about Mariama.
Netflix has not clarified how pivotal Pellegrini’s appearance, Assane’s fate in prison and the fallout from his choices will be for what comes next. Until the new episodes arrive, those questions remain open.
What the Part 4 Release Means for Assane Diop
The new season runs eight episodes, compared with seven for the previous one. The three year gap is the longest wait between seasons in the show’s history, and it was reportedly a deliberate choice to invest time in raising the creative scale. Omar Sy has described the series as an extraordinary plaything that brings him great joy every time.
Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab and Shirine Boutella are returning, and Théo Christine and Laïka Blanc-Francard join the cast as new faces. Louis Leterrier serves as showrunner alongside Sy. Filming took place in Paris from May to September of 2025.
The stakes extend beyond the story. The first part alone drew 99.5 million views in its first 91 days. Netflix has also said the series reached 76 million households in its first month, placing it among the streamer’s most successful non English programs.
After a finale that traded freedom for family, the series now has to show how Assane can outwit an enemy who has studied him since boyhood. If the envelope from the next cell really is the work of Hubert Pellegrini, do you think Assane can use the warning in ‘The Cagliostro’s Revenge’ to turn the trap around before the new season reaches Netflix?
