How Laika’s ‘Wildwood’ Plans to Hold Its Place on the Big Screen

‘Wildwood’ arrives in theaters this week as the studio’s first film in seven years, and moviegoers are already asking how long it will stay on the big screen. No official digital or streaming date has been confirmed, and no fixed end date for the theatrical run has surfaced in the reporting so far. The answer will depend largely on how audiences respond in the coming weeks.

The ‘Wildwood’ theatrical run is shaping up as one of the more closely watched stories of the fall season. Distribution, runtime, box office tracking and critical reception all point to a release that may need time to find its audience.

Wildwood in Theaters and the Release Date Rollout

Laika set the nationwide opening for October 23, with Fathom Entertainment handling a full theatrical release across the United States. That makes this a wide release rather than a limited engagement, even though the distributor is better known for other kinds of programming.

Before that date, Laika and Fathom announced fan first premium format screenings in more than 100 theatrical locations on October 19. The early shows give word of mouth a few days to build ahead of the full opening.

The film also had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11. Laika has been clear about how it wants the film to be seen, with Travis Knight saying it was designed to be discovered in the dark, on a big screen, alongside a room full of fellow audience members.

Inside the Wildwood Theatrical Run Strategy

Fathom is best known for partnering with studios on re-releases of popular films and for broadcasting live events in theaters. According to Boxoffice Pro, the company has less of a history launching full theatrical runs than Laika’s earlier distribution partners, which made the opening weekend screen count harder to pin down.

The partnership grew out of earlier success. Coraline earned $56 million worldwide in its return to theaters, and the studio has described a long view approach built on returning its films to theaters over time. That philosophy suggests Laika is comfortable with a film that earns its audience gradually.

Format choices could also shape how long the film holds screens. Its theatrical runtime of 131 minutes makes it the longest stop motion animated film by run time, and earlier listings had pointed to 139 minutes. One analysis noted that a lengthy runtime means multiplexes can offer a smaller number of showings, and the film is also the first Laika release to receive a PG-13 rating.

Box Office Tracking and Staying Power

Early projections have been mixed. Boxoffice Pro’s long range forecast set a domestic opening weekend range of $10 million to $15 million, while other tracking cited by SlashFilm had the film eyeing a debut between $5 million and $10 million against a budget said to be around $100 million.

That gap puts pressure on the weeks after opening. SlashFilm argued that the film would need an outsized overseas turnout, unusually long legs beyond its opening weekend, or both. Another outlook made a similar point, saying a strong international showing or a long run beyond opening weekend would likely be required.

Critical reception could help. ComicBook.com reported that the film sits at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and Variety’s Guy Lodge described it as a spectacular success both as a formal achievement and as a crowdpleaser. The same report noted that Laika’s films have tended to benefit more from long term word of mouth than from initial heat.

Wildwood Streaming Window and What Comes After

For viewers wondering when the film might move to home screens, nothing is official yet. TV Guide currently lists the film as not available to stream, and a Plex listing shows no streaming availability either.

Industry guesses do exist. FandomWire reported that, based on industry estimates, a digital release through video on demand could land around late December or January, with a streaming debut possibly arriving by spring. Those timelines are estimates rather than announcements, and they should be read that way.

For now, theaters remain the only confirmed way to see the film, and the length of its stay will be decided by ticket sales rather than a published schedule. If the early reviews hold and the film plays well past its opening weekend, would you make the trip to see Prue’s journey into the forest on a big screen, or wait for ‘Wildwood’ to reach your living room?
