Trailer and Production Details for the Netflix Disaster Film
Netflix released the trailer, the release date and the first images together. The footage sets up the central problem early. The trailer introduces Wirpul, a young man working on a private yacht off Acapulco who is promoted to captain.
When a major hurricane is announced, his boss tells him he cannot leave the boat under any circumstances, so he asks his half brother Candi to join him. That decision pushes two men with a complicated history into the same small space as the storm closes in.
The production leaned on practical filmmaking. A 200 square meter tank was built at Estudios Churubusco in Mexico City, along with three boats weighing eight tons each, and the crew used fans and powerful water equipment to recreate the storm. Digital visual effects and on set practical effects were combined to convey a Category 5 hurricane. Filming also took place in Acapulco.
Director Jorge Michel Grau has spoken about the scale of the project. In an interview with El País, he said “This is a film that Mexican cinema has never seen before.”
Full Cast of ‘Surviving Hurricane Otis’
Benny Emmanuel plays Wirpul and Kristyan Ferrer plays his half brother Candi. Emmanuel is known for ‘Dale gas’, ‘Serpientes y escaleras’ and ‘Vgly’, while Ferrer has appeared in ‘Los minutos muertos’, ‘Sin nombre’ and ‘Buen día Ramón’.
Mónica del Carmen, Mónica Jiménez, Gonzalo Vega and Andrew Leland round out the cast. One database listing identifies Andrew Leland Rogers as Nico and Gonzalo Vega Jr. as Napo.
Behind the camera, the filmmaker has a genre background. Grau previously directed ‘We Are What We Are’. He co wrote the screenplay with José Leonor Alejandro and Venancio Villalobos.
The producers are Julián de Tavira, Alexis Fridman, Diego Rabasa, Viridiana Torres, Héctor Villegas and Leonardo Cordero. The film was made by Netflix and Perro Azul, in coproduction with LACOproductora.
Plot and the True Story Behind the Hurricane Otis Movie
The official synopsis follows Wirpul and Candi as they fight for survival in the middle of the sea when an unexpected storm becomes a Category 5 hurricane off the coast of Acapulco. They are left without an engine or communication and drifting, while also facing a relationship strained by years of family conflict.
The characters are fictional, but the inspiration is real. The story draws on Marlon Valdez and Jonathan Chino, two young men who looked after yachts for their employer and survived the storm aboard one of the vessels. The film is based on reporting from El País about their ordeal.
Valdez and Chino advised the production and gave firsthand testimony, and the filmmakers also interviewed other survivors, civil protection staff, members of the Mexican Navy and scientists from the national weather service. Grau was struck by the reporting and chose to build a fictional story inspired by what he found.
The real storm gives the film its weight. Otis hit Acapulco in the early hours of October 25, 2023, with maximum winds of 270 kilometers per hour, and the official toll was 68 dead along with dozens missing. The film blends disaster cinema with family drama and reflects on the unequal impact of natural disasters.
If you plan to watch it, tell us in the comments whether making the story about two estranged half brothers, instead of the two friends who actually survived on that yacht, feels like the right way to honor what Marlon and Jonathan went through.
