Robert Downey Jr. Responds to an “Accidental” Fan Account Follow in Full Doctor Doom Mode
Robert Downey Jr.’s Instagram has quietly become one of the most entertaining parts of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ promotional campaign. Ever since he was revealed as Victor von Doom at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, a move that reportedly brought him more than 1.1 million new Instagram followers almost overnight, the actor has used his account to tease the villain in playful, in-character ways. With the film arriving on December 18, those teases are only picking up speed.
His track record is impressive. When the first full trailer dropped, Downey shared a new poster with a caption warning that Doom doesn’t bother knocking, and for the release of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, he posted an image of Doom at the movies, declaring the villain would attend but refuse to share his snacks.
He has also marked holidays with Doom-themed posts, from a Father’s Day drawing signed by Doom’s child to a Thanksgiving image of Iron Man and Doctor Doom pulling a wishbone. Now, Downey has pulled off his most delightful Doom moment yet.
The actor followed the Marvel fan page Marvel Update on Instagram, and the account was understandably thrilled, sharing a post celebrating that Downey had followed them back, perhaps by accident, while admitting it still meant a lot to them.
Downey didn’t let the “accident” theory slide. In a pinned comment beneath the post, he replied fully in character, insisting that Doom simply doesn’t make mistakes. The response has since collected more than 51,000 likes and hundreds of replies, with fans thrilled to see the actor play along.

The moment didn’t stay on Instagram for long. On X, fan accounts quickly spread screenshots of the exchange, with one Doom-dedicated page declaring that Downey had officially begun his part of the ‘Doomsday’ promo by following fan pages, and comparing the excitement to the hype of the Infinity Saga era. Another fan joked that while Downey may have accidentally followed a fan account, Doom supposedly makes no mistakes, before playfully questioning whether that’s really true.
Robert accidentally followed a fan account on instagram 😂 but Doom makes no mistakes ( or does he? ) 💅🏻 https://t.co/6Jq13uhQlS

For longtime followers, the gesture feels especially notable. Back in 2021, fans panicked when Downey unfollowed his Marvel co-stars on Instagram, leaving him following only 43 accounts at the time, none of them actors. Seeing him now actively engaging with a fan page has given many Marvel supporters a sense that he’s fully embracing his return to the franchise.
Downey’s commitment to the bit has become part of his Doom persona. Earlier in production, he shared a post labeled as his Doom workstation essentials, featuring a copy of Jonathan Hickman and Sanford Greene’s ‘Doom’ #1, while other posts showed him on set in a muscle suit with facial tracking dots. He has even celebrated Mother’s Day with an image of his wife Susan Downey as Sue Storm, alongside a mother knitting Doom’s costume.
Each post has sparked new fan theories, from speculation about Doom’s tragic family backstory to whether Downey might also return as Tony Stark. Marvel hasn’t confirmed any of those theories, but the actor clearly enjoys keeping fans guessing.
The timing of Downey’s latest stunt couldn’t be better. A new look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ debuts during Game 1 of the World Series tonight, and the Russo brothers’ film is now less than 2 months away. If this exchange is any indication, Downey plans to keep Doom’s voice alive online right up until release day.

For fans, it’s a reminder of why his return was such a big deal in the first place. Whether he’s posting cryptic posters or defending an “accidental” follow, Downey seems to be having just as much fun as the audience.
