More than 2 decades after his last big-screen outing, Sacha Baron Cohen’s most infamous creation is back in cinemas. ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ hit theaters on October 23 through Amazon MGM Studios, marking Cohen’s feature directorial debut. He co-stars opposite Morgana Robinson in a film that was shot in secret.

The story finds the self-styled voice of youth facing an unexpected crisis. After 20 years spent lazing around, Ali G discovers his long-term girlfriend, Julie, is 8 months pregnant, and he heads to America to reclaim his former glory before running into adversaries who threaten him and his child. It follows 2002’s ‘Ali G Indahouse’, which made $23.3 million worldwide.

Now Ali G has turned his attention to one of Britain’s biggest music icons. In a new promotional sketch shared by One Take, the character tries to kick Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher out of a movie theater. Ali G, dressed in a puffy silver, green and pink jacket, confronts the musician in a darkened cinema.

The joke is spelled out in on-screen text written in Ali G’s unmistakable style, declaring that not even Gallagher could get a seat to see his movie. It’s a cheeky way of suggesting the film is selling out on its opening weekend.

The bit fits the character perfectly. Ali G has always presented himself as a celebrity and cultural authority, and the sketch turns that bravado against a genuine rock legend. This isn’t the first time Cohen has taken the character into the real world. Earlier this year, he showed up at the Wimbledon finals dressed as Ali G, jokingly offering to sell weed to bored spectators during the match.

The film’s very announcement was a stunt too. Cohen revealed the title and October release date in a video posted on the official Ali G Instagram account, written entirely in the character’s voice. Like ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’, the project continues his relationship with Amazon MGM.

Not everyone has welcomed the character’s return. Some activists have labeled Ali G a racist caricature and urged theaters not to show the movie, with one UK campaign reportedly sending about 37,000 emails to cinemas.

Backlash intensified after the trailer arrived, with campaigners trying to get the film pulled from screens. However, reports that the campaign had already secured a major victory appear to be untrue, and the film opened in theaters as planned.

The Gallagher sketch arrives at a crucial moment for the film’s box office prospects. ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ opened in a packed weekend alongside DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’ and ‘Klara and the Sun’. ‘Clayface’ is tracking to top the chart with an estimated $23 million to $25 million.

Cohen’s track record suggests the comedy could still find a sizable audience. His first ‘Borat’ film was a massive box office hit, grossing $262.6 million worldwide on an $18 million budget.

Whether audiences turn out in big enough numbers to truly leave Noel Gallagher without a seat remains to be seen. For now, the playful promo shows Cohen hasn’t lost his knack for blurring the line between character and reality.
