‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Hit a Record-Breaking New Milestone as Doom Fever Spreads
Marvel has spent months proving that the hype surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is more than just online chatter. When premium-format tickets went on sale on July 20, the film pulled in $16.5 million on its very first day across roughly 1,000 domestic theaters. That was about double what ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ earned on its own first day of presales.
The momentum never really slowed. Once wider sales opened around Disney’s D23 event, the film became the first movie in history to cross $40 million in domestic presales a full 100 days before release. Disney CFO Hugh Johnston later confirmed at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference that domestic presales had passed $50 million, with more than 70% of sales going to Disney’s new Infinity Vision premium format.
Now the numbers have jumped again. According to box office account Lets Cinema, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has crossed $125 million in presales, setting new records with the release still weeks away.
The milestone builds on an already historic run. Just 18 days ago, tracker Global Box Office reported the film had passed $100 million in global presales, following a record-setting start overseas that made it the fastest movie ever to reach $1 million in pre-release sales in both Brazil and the U.K.
For context, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ had an estimated $140 million in presales, a mark ‘Doomsday’ now appears to be chasing with plenty of time left on the clock. The pace is especially impressive compared with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. TheWrap reported that after 2 days of sales, ‘Doomsday’ was running about 65% ahead of that film, which didn’t cross $40 million in presales until about 40 days before its release.

International markets are also showing strength. In Mexico, one tracker reported that ‘Doomsday’ had already surpassed the entire presale cycle of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and made nearly 3.5 times the full presale run of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’.
The presale surge has fueled enormous expectations. Early estimates had the film tracking for between $250 million and $300 million in its domestic opening weekend, which would place it among the biggest debuts of all time.

There’s one notable obstacle. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18, the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’, and it won’t play in IMAX in the US for its first 3 weeks because Villeneuve’s film holds exclusivity. That makes Disney’s Infinity Vision screens all the more important to its opening.

Marvel’s marketing has played a big role in keeping excitement high. The 5-hour livestream of the cast announcement netted 275 million digital views and 3.1 million social mentions. Marvel titles also recorded more than 420 million hours on Disney+ in August, a jump Disney linked to anticipation for the film.

There’s more on the way, including a Dunkin’ collaboration set for November 4. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom leading the charge and heroes from 3 universes colliding, fans clearly aren’t waiting until December to lock in their seats. If presales keep climbing at this rate, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could be on track to challenge some of the biggest records in box office history.
