Liam Neeson Leads a Televised Cross-Country Chase in Mark Vanselow’s ‘The Mongoose’

Liam Neeson returns to the road in ‘The Mongoose’, an action thriller that casts him as a war hero accused of a crime he did not commit. The story sees his character lead police on a televised cross-country car chase. The premise places the film squarely in the territory of the star’s recent run of grounded, vehicle-heavy thrillers.

The film also marks the feature directorial debut of Mark Vanselow, Neeson’s longtime stunt double. That backstory gives ‘The Mongoose’ a point of interest beyond its star, and it shapes much of the conversation around the project ahead of its arrival this autumn.

‘The Mongoose’ Plot and Premise Explained

Neeson plays Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, and German outlet Serienjunkies describes him as a highly decorated war veteran. The same source says the character flees after a fatal accident, which sets off a chase that is broadcast live across the country.

The official synopsis describes a war hero who is falsely accused of a crime and has nothing left to lose. He enlists former comrades and sympathetic citizens hoping for his escape, and a nationwide car chase against law enforcement follows. That structure suggests a story driven as much by public sympathy as by pursuit.

Filmstarts reports that Flanagan is also trying to persuade his ex-wife Tara to leave her violent current husband. The detail points to a personal motive running underneath the spectacle of the chase.

The Movie Waffler characterizes the film as an old-fashioned car chase thriller built around a war hero falsely accused. The label fits a project that appears to prize practical momentum over elaborate plotting.

‘The Mongoose’ Cast Includes Marisa Tomei, Ving Rhames and Michael Chiklis

Neeson is joined by Marisa Tomei, Ving Rhames and Michael Chiklis. Tomei plays Tara, the former wife whose situation appears to drive Flanagan’s choices.

The additions of Tomei, Rhames and Chiklis were announced in February 2025, and filming was underway in Australia at that point. The supporting ensemble gives the film a recognizable group of character actors around its lead.

Neeson is known for a consistent output of low-budget action films. Samuel Goldwyn Films previously released the Neeson vehicles ‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’, ‘Absolution’ and ‘Cold Storage’, so the distributor is familiar with how his audience responds.

Mark Vanselow Directorial Debut Draws on Years Beside Neeson

Vanselow has worked with Neeson since the 1999 film ‘The Haunting’. Moving from stunt work to the director’s chair is a significant step, and the long partnership offers an obvious foundation for it.

Screen Daily notes that Vanselow has served as Neeson’s stunt double and second unit director on more than 20 projects, including all of the ‘Taken’ films and both ‘Ice Road’ features. That résumé suggests deep familiarity with how the star moves through action sequences.

Goldwyn executives said Vanselow brings an authenticity to the action that only someone who spent decades alongside Neeson could deliver. The comment comes from the distributor, so it reads as promotion, though it does describe the selling point the studio intends to lean on.

The script comes from Thompson Evans, whose earlier credits include ‘Buried in Barstow’. The project is financed by Code Entertainment and Jupiter Peak Productions.

‘The Mongoose’ Release Date and Where to Watch

The film is slated for a North American release on October 30. Samuel Goldwyn Films acquired US rights and plans a theatrical release.

Internationally, the route runs through streaming. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Amazon Prime Video pre-purchased most of the international rights at Cannes in a deal nearing 20 million dollars. In Germany, the film arrives on Prime Video on November 4.

The production planned an eight-week shoot across Melbourne and regional Victoria, based at Melbourne Screen Hub’s Footscray location, and was expected to create 453 screen jobs. With Australian roads standing in for a nationwide pursuit and a veteran stunt performer now directing, do you think Vanselow’s hands-on approach will make the chase in ‘The Mongoose’ feel different from Neeson’s earlier road thrillers?
