Robert Pattinson Hints ‘The Batman Part II’ Will Unlock a Side of Bruce Wayne We Haven’t Seen
Few superhero sequels have tested fan patience quite like Matt Reeves’ follow-up to his 2022 Gotham noir. ‘The Batman’ hit theaters on March 4, 2022, and went on to gross more than $770 million at the box office. Since then, the wait for a second chapter has been long, and the speculation has only grown louder.
Part of what made the first film stick was how it treated Bruce Wayne as a deeply wounded man rather than a polished hero. Pattinson once explained that Bruce carries enormous trauma and built an elaborate psychological coping system that ultimately turned him into Batman, a kind of misguided self-therapy. That angle gave the character a rawness fans have kept debating ever since.
Now Pattinson is suggesting the sequel pushes that idea even further. In a post shared by Culture Crave, the actor says ‘The Batman 2’ has an understanding of Bruce Wayne and Batman’s psychology “in a way I don’t think has been seen before.” He also gushed over the screenplay, calling it “just amazing what [Matt Reeves] has done with it.”
It isn’t the first time he has praised the project. On the red carpet for ‘The Drama,’ Pattinson told Deadline that the script is extraordinary, and he later hinted that the sequel is heading in some very bold directions. The consistent message is that this is not a simple repeat of what worked the first time.
Pattinson has also been candid about how different the follow-up feels. He told Collider the film is “a real left turn” from the first while still keeping some of its established feel, and he called the script incredibly dense. He added that Reeves is the kind of director who clearly has the entire story in his head already.
That density may be a product of how long the story took to shape. DC Studios co-head James Gunn confirmed in July 2025 that Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin had finished the script. Reeves has said the writing process ran longer than he hoped, partly for personal reasons, and that Pattinson was reportedly impressed by the script’s fresh take on the dual identities of Batman and Bruce Wayne.
The ensemble around Pattinson is stacked, too. Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, Sebastian Koch, Jayme Lawson and Gil Perez-Abraham all co-star, and the film is currently shooting ahead of its Feb. 18, 2028, release. Stan has even compared the experience to making ‘The Godfather Part II,’ saying he feels that highly about the project.
There is also a strong creative case for a deeper psychological dive. Some critics have pointed out that the first film was less interested in Bruce as a standalone character, with Pattinson adding complexity to the few scenes where Bruce took center stage. If the sequel shifts more weight onto his inner life, the actor could finally get the material to match his instincts.
Of course, Pattinson is hardly going to trash his own movie, and nothing about the plot has been revealed. Still, between the cast, the long-gestating script and an actor who keeps using words like “ambitious,” expectations are climbing. Whatever Reeves has planned for Bruce Wayne’s mind, fans will have to wait until 2028 to find out.
