‘The Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence Has a Very Blunt Answer About Ever Playing ‘X-Men’ Icon Mystique Again
With the X-Men about to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been wondering which familiar mutants might return. Jennifer Lawrence, who played the shapeshifting Mystique in Fox’s ‘X-Men’ films, is one of the biggest names people keep asking about.
Lawrence played the blue-skinned mutant in 4 films between 2011 and 2019: ‘X-Men: First Class’, ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’. Over the years, she has been open about how hard the transformation was, especially the body paint and prosthetics the role required.
Now the Oscar winner has given her clearest answer yet. In an interview with Allure, Lawrence was asked whether she would play Mystique again and go through the heavy prosthetic process. She replied, “Never say never, but absolutely f—ing not.”
The answer got plenty of attention online, and Variety turned her colorful phrasing into a headline. Coming from Lawrence, though, it was hardly a surprise, since the makeup has long been her least favorite part of the job.
She also explained why. “You know how airbrushing is very cold?” she said, adding, “I am ticklish.” Lawrence has talked about the discomfort before. On the ‘Call Her Daddy‘ podcast, she said the process took “eight hours every time,” and she has previously described the body paint and glue as some of the most uncomfortable parts of the role.
She has also said the preparation permanently damaged her hair. Looking back, she described learning “how little sleep I can operate on” while making the films. The physical demands of the character have been a theme in her interviews for years. She discussed them in a 2014 ‘Tonight Show’ appearance and again at a December 2025 actress roundtable with Cynthia Erivo.
in 2011 the first trailer for X-Men: First Class is released. Gotta say that Mark Vaughn knew what he was doing. Jen’s first foray into Hollywood blockbusters proves quite valuable. (10-Feb) https://t.co/4lZmKwmvhK

Lawrence’s memories of the role aren’t all negative. She said her favorite part was the stunt work, which pushed her to train and learn how to move as the character. She also praised her stunt double, Renee Moneymaker. ComicBook.com noted that Moneymaker is a close friend of Lawrence’s and also doubled for her as Katniss in ‘The Hunger Games’ films.
Lawrence’s comments come at an interesting time for the X-Men. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, due December 18, brings the mutants into the MCU, and fans have been speculating about which Fox-era characters might appear.
So far, no Mystique has been confirmed for Marvel Studios’ version of the X-Men. ComicBook.com also pointed out that an X-Men reboot is planned for the MCU, which leaves room for the shapeshifter to be recast.

The character is already showing up in the film’s marketing, though. Mystique appears among the 8 character designs on collector’s edition ‘happy’ coffee cans released as part of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ campaign.
Some commentators have suggested that improved visual effects could make a future version of Mystique much less demanding than the 8-hour sessions Lawrence went through. For now, Marvel hasn’t revealed any plans for the character.
Whatever comes next for Mystique, Lawrence has made it clear she won’t be the one sitting in the makeup chair. Fans who loved her version will still have the 4 films she made to revisit.
Should Marvel recast Mystique for the MCU after Jennifer Lawrence ruled out returning?
