Resurfaced Footage Gives Fans a New Look at NBC’s Canceled 2011 ‘Wonder Woman’ Series

Before Gal Gadot made Wonder Woman a box office force, the Amazon princess almost got her own network TV show. In 2011, NBC ordered a ‘Wonder Woman’ pilot from David E. Kelley, with Adrianne Palicki starring as Diana Prince.

The project had a strong supporting cast. Elizabeth Hurley played the villain Veronica Cale, Tracie Thoms played assistant Etta Candy, Cary Elwes played company executive Henry Detmer, and Justin Bruening played Steve Trevor.

Now footage from the scrapped series is circulating online again. A clip shared by CoveredGeekly shows Palicki as Diana in her gold tiara, alongside a young Pedro Pascal, who played Ed Indelicato, Wonder Woman’s liaison to the police department.

The resurfaced footage has fans looking back at an unusual piece of DC history. It also highlights a fun twist in Pascal’s career, since he later played villain Maxwell Lord opposite Gal Gadot in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’.

The full pilot was once leaked on YouTube, though the upload was later removed. Since then, glimpses like this have been one of the few ways for fans to see what the series might have looked like.

Kelley’s version took a fresh approach to the character. Diana ran Themyscira Industries, a company that marketed Wonder Woman as a role model, while also fighting crime in costume.

In the pilot, she suspects Cale of distributing a dangerous performance-enhancing drug and confronts her operation after a teenager dies. Jeffrey Reiner directed the episode for Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment. The show also changed several familiar elements. Wonder Woman wore blue pants with gold stars instead of shorts, and the invisible jet was replaced by an opaque white plane.

The costume drew criticism when early images appeared. New York’s Kyle Buchanan compared it to a ‘Project Runway’ challenge gone wrong, while Fox News criticized what it saw as the loss of American symbolism.

Warner Bros. later updated the boots and pants after fan feedback, but it wasn’t enough. NBC passed on the series in May 2011, and Kelley later said the team made mistakes that it never got the chance to fix. Palicki has been open about how hard the cancellation was. “I was devastated for a while after, I’m not going to lie,” she told TheWrap, adding, “We were a year or two too soon.”

She explained that the pilot came right before Marvel movies took off. She also noted that she wouldn’t have been able to take her role in ‘The Orville’ if she had been playing Wonder Woman.

Pascal has looked back on it with surprise. In a Variety interview, he said he believed the series would be picked up whether it was good or not, and that after it wasn’t, he returned to procedural TV work.

Pascal’s return to the Wonder Woman world came years later. Patty Jenkins cast him as Maxwell Lord in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ after the 2 worked together on another unsold pilot, ‘Exposed’.

He has admitted that the connection to his earlier Wonder Woman role didn’t even occur to him at first. Today, Pascal is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, which makes this resurfaced footage even more interesting for fans.

Would you have watched Adrianne Palicki's Wonder Woman series if NBC had picked it up?
