‘Youth’ Season 2 Remains Undecided at HBO as Sharon Horgan’s Comedy Reaches Its Finale
The first season of ‘Youth’ concludes on Sunday, November 1, after eight episodes that began airing in September. Sharon Horgan created the HBO comedy and writes, stars in and executive produces it. With the finale arriving, attention is turning to whether a second season will follow.
HBO has not yet made an official statement about a second season pickup, and the finale’s resolution will likely shape whether Alex’s journey continues. That leaves the future of ‘Youth’ open for now. Here is what the available reporting says about the renewal picture, the possible timeline, the cast and the story the show could build on.
Where the ‘Youth’ Renewal Status Stands With HBO
TV Insider reported that the series has not been renewed, and that any decision rests with HBO. Our Culture Mag likewise found no official news about the show’s future. Neither report rules out more episodes, but neither confirms them.
TV Insider pointed to Horgan’s earlier titles ‘Catastrophe’ and ‘Bad Sisters’ as shows that ran for multiple seasons. The history of her earlier HBO comedy ‘Divorce’ offers another point of comparison. That series premiered on October 9, 2016, and HBO renewed it for a second season on November 14, 2016.
‘Youth’ is part of a two year first look television deal between HBO and Horgan’s company Merman. Amy Gravitt, an executive vice president of HBO and Max comedy programming, said Horgan’s willingness to draw on her own experiences makes viewers feel a little less lonely. That working relationship gives the show a stable home, even if no renewal has been announced.
What a ‘Youth’ Second Season Release Date Could Look Like
Our Culture Mag suggested that if all goes well, a second season could arrive sometime in late 2027. That is the outlet’s own estimate and not a date from HBO. It does give readers a rough sense of how long a gap might be expected.
The show’s own history points to a long lead time. HBO greenlit the series in February 2025, Rupert Friend was cast in January 2026, and Sharlene Whyte, Aran Murphy and Robbie Gee joined in March 2026. The show then premiered on September 20, 2026.
Horgan has also spoken about how far ahead she plans. Discussing the premiere’s ending, she told TheWrap that “It was always going to end like that.” She added that she had written a Radiohead song into the script a year and a half earlier.
The ‘Youth’ Cast Who Could Return
The main cast includes Horgan as Alex, Rupert Friend as Patrick, Sharlene Whyte as Sam, Aran Murphy as Ruari and Robbie Gee as Frank. Harriet Walter, Anne Reid and Freddie Fox also appear in the ensemble. A returning season would presumably draw on this group.
TV Insider noted that without knowing how the first season ends, it is difficult to say who would star in a second one. Friend has offered a hint about the show’s approach. Speaking to TV Insider, he said the writing around Patrick’s pros and cons list works because it is “left ambiguous.”
Whyte plays Sam, who is Alex’s boss and best friend, and Murphy plays her troubled son. The trailer described Ruari as emotionally unraveling. Those two relationships carry much of the series, which would make them natural anchors if the story continues.
What a ‘Youth’ Second Season Story Could Build On
Alex looks forward to more time for herself when Ruari heads to university, but he unexpectedly returns. She then has to balance her busy job, the care of her parents and her son, and an active dating life, while feeling drawn to the charismatic Patrick. That setup leaves plenty of unresolved ground for a follow up.
Horgan has described the premise as the sandwich generation, with a protagonist squeezed between elderly parents and a teenage child. She has also spoken about the difficulty of blending comedy and drama, saying the show has to stay nimble and believable and deliver a joke right after something heartbreaking. Critics have responded well, and the show currently holds a 96 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The finale is titled “Agent of the Year.” Horgan has said she uses Alex’s wardrobe to extend the storytelling, so even small details may carry weight as the season closes. If HBO does bring Alex back, would you rather see her settle into a life with Patrick or keep juggling Ruari and her ageing parents on her own terms?
