HBO’s ‘The Gilded Age’ returned for its fourth season on Sunday, November 1, bringing viewers back to the opulent world of 1880s New York society. Created by Julian Fellowes, the period drama once again follows the Russells, the van Rhijns and their rivals as they jockey for status in a rapidly changing city.

This season, the drama centers on the consequences of Bertha Russell’s rise in society. Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson and Denée Benton all return for the 8-episode run, alongside a deep bench of supporting players including Audra McDonald, Jim Gaffigan and Phylicia Rashad.

The premiere also featured 2 very unexpected faces. About 8 minutes into the episode, Matt Damon and David Letterman appear as background extras, silently crossing the street outside George Russell’s lavish home.

The moment lasts only about 6 seconds. Dressed in period attire, Damon sports a top hat and a curled mustache, while Letterman wears a long coat, a bowler hat, and a bushy white beard.

Neither star speaks, and HBO confirmed to Vulture that neither received an on-screen credit. Their appearance was so subtle that many viewers likely didn’t notice them at all. The cameo has an unusual backstory. According to Vulture, as reported by LateNighter, Letterman has wanted to slip anonymously into a film or TV show for nearly 50 years.

The idea dates back to 1977, when he saw his friend Gary Mule Deer appear as an extra in ‘Annie Hall’. Ever since, Letterman had hoped to pull off a similar quiet appearance of his own.

The opportunity finally came through his Netflix series, ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction’. The show’s team pitched the idea to Damon, who agreed, and ‘The Gilded Age’ signed on to make it happen.

Isabel Richardson, the showrunner of Letterman’s Netflix series, told Vulture that the idea came up while the team was researching Damon’s early career as a background actor. Richardson, a fan of ‘The Gilded Age’, reached out to the HBO drama to set it up.

The scene was filmed in May on the show’s Long Island back lot. Both men went through costume fittings, with Damon receiving period-appropriate facial hair, while Letterman brought his own bowler hat.

Fans will get to see more of the experience in the upcoming season of ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction’. Damon is set to appear in Season 7, alongside guests Julia Roberts, Jimmy Kimmel and Alex Honnold.

Netflix has said the new season will premiere later this year, though an exact date hasn’t been announced. The episode will likely give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how the 2 stars prepared for their moment in 1880s New York.

For Damon, surprise appearances are nothing new. The Boston Globe noted his memorable cameos in ‘Interstellar’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, ‘Deadpool 2’ and ‘EuroTrip’. This one may be his most low-key yet. Unlike many of his other surprise roles, it relies entirely on viewers spotting him in the background rather than giving him a big moment.

‘The Gilded Age’ airs Sundays on HBO and streams on HBO Max, with Fellowes returning as writer and executive producer. Now that word of the cameo is out, fans are likely to rewatch the premiere just to spot the famous pair strolling past the Russell mansion. It’s a lighthearted surprise in a series usually defined by social scheming and rivalries.
