Nicolas Cage has owned some remarkable properties over the years, from a Queen Anne Victorian in San Francisco to a mansion in New Orleans’ French Quarter. About 2 years ago, he added a modern beachfront home in Malibu, which he bought for $10.5 million in the gated Sea Level Drive community.

The ocean-facing house spans about 4,000 square feet and includes a secluded beach, a roof deck, a private courtyard, and a garage with an elevator. Its 4 en suite bedrooms include a primary suite facing the Pacific, with a spa-style bath, a fireplace and its own ocean-facing deck.

That dream home is now the reason Cage doesn’t have a stable place to stay. Asked about his Halloween plans at L.A. Comic Con on October 31, the 62-year-old actor said he is currently a little bit homeless.

Cage explained that something happened to his house in Malibu, so he is sort of living in hotels. He didn’t go into further detail, but the cause has been in the news for weeks. His housing situation didn’t stop him from celebrating. He said he planned to take his 4-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica, then watch Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ after putting her to bed.

The trouble began in September. According to Realtor.com, a sinkhole near the property started at roughly 30 square feet before collapsing on September 6 and leaving a hole of about 900 square feet.

Photos taken on September 8 showed a deep hole where the driveway used to be, with cracked asphalt and concrete collapsing toward the enclosed garage. Officials, including Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Jonathan Torres, pointed to coastal erosion as the likely cause, and some reports also cited heavy rain.

Cage was reportedly not home when the collapse happened. Witnesses said they could see waves crashing through the hole. The damage reached well beyond Cage’s home. Authorities declared a state of emergency, and the City of Malibu first red-tagged 7 nearby homes as unsafe for occupancy.

Another 24 properties were later marked unsafe, bringing the total to 31. The city explained that the collapsed driveway extended into the roadway and blocked access for residents and emergency services. The homeowners association began repairs, which it estimated could take up to 5 weeks. The damage also left normal access and evacuation routes in the area blocked.

Cage has been trying to protect the property. Soon after the sinkhole appeared, he reportedly filed 3 permits, including an emergency request to place sandbags against the beach and the house to block waves and slow the erosion.

The other approved permits cover debris removal, shoring installation, and excavation to collect soil samples. Those steps should help determine how much of the property can be saved.

Even though Cage is living in hotels for now, he does have other options. He keeps a full-time residence in Nevada, and in March he reportedly bought a 2-bedroom condo in Manhattan’s Essex House Residences for $6.5 million.

He first listed the Malibu home in March 2024 for $11.25 million and also offered it for rent at $25,000 per month. With the damage still being repaired, it’s unclear when the beachfront home will be livable again. Cage’s sense of humor about the situation has won over plenty of fans online. For now, though, the actor’s Malibu getaway remains off-limits.
